JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville High School athletic director and head football coach Steve Wells announced on Tuesday five Fightin’ Indians that have been recognized as Players of the Week for the Week 0 game against Carthage.
Senior-quarterback Ryan Black did an admirable job in directing the tribe’s re-worked offense and as a result has been cited as the Offensive Player of the Week.
Black completed 16-of-22 passes for 193 yards (12.1 average per catch) and tossed a pair of scoring strikes without giving up an interception.
“Ryan (Black) did a good job for us out there Friday,” Wells commented. “He had three balls dropped on him, and if that had not happened, his numbers would have looked even better.”
Defensive Player of the Week plaudits go to Skylar Price, a senior defensive back.
Price made three solo tackles, five assisted tackles and had two hits on Friday.
Senior-offensive tackle Tedrick Tilley graded out at 81-percent to garner the Offensive Lineman of the Week award according to Wells.
In his first year at place kicker, Rodrigo Carreon, a junior, nabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Carreon made his only extra point attempt while also drilling a 41-yard field goal.
“Rodrigo (Carreon) did a fine job in his varsity action,” Wells said. “He was perfect on his extra point tries and he hit a long field goal in the game. He also did well on his kick offs.”
Warrior of the Week goes to senior offensive lineman Brandon Ganske.
“Even though Brandon didn’t get to play in the game Friday, his work ethic in practice and his overall attitude is exemplary,” Wells said.
The Indians (0-1) will be looking for their first win of 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host Texas High (1-0).
