JACKSONVILLE —
Frankston Indians (0-0) at Brook Hill Guard (0-0)
7:30 p.m., tonight, Herrington Stadium in Bullard (Brook Hill Classic)
Coaches — Matt Nally, Frankston; Terry Pirtle, Brook Hill
Last Week — This is the first game of the season for both teams.
Next Week — Frankston at Elkhart; Brook Hill, idle.
Game Notes: Matt Nally will be serving as head coach of Frankston for the first time this evening...Nally took over for Sam Wells, who moved over to Elkhart, this summer...Frankston returns 15 starters off of last year's bi-district finalist team, so Nally should have some talent to work with this year...The Indians' big gun is Tye Griffin (6-3, 190, Sr.) who will be doubling up at LB and at QB this year...Griffin led the team with 175 tackles in 2011...Lightning-quick Caleb Williams (5-9, 185, Sr.) should see plenty of action at running back...QB Will Weathers, RB T. J. Dunks, WR Chase McDermott and OL Mason Dickey are some of the key returnees for the Guard, who lost 20 lettermen off of last year's TAPPS Division III state champion squad...LB Malik Alley, OB Ryan Young and DB Michael Greening are the movers and shakers on the defensive side for the Guard...If Brook Hill can continue to move the ball as well as it did in scrimmage wins over Malakoff and Center, the Guard could be in position to collect the “W”...The Frankston defense should have something to say about that, though.
Terrell Tigers (0-0) at Rusk Eagles (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Eagles Stadium in Rusk
Coaches — Darrell Jordan, Terrell; Ted Patton, Rusk
Last Week — This is the first game of the season for both teams.
Next Week — Dallas Carter at Terrell; Crockett at Rusk
Game Notes: A young and inexperienced Terrell offense may be just the thing to give the Rusk defense a boost of confidence...Devonte Nix appears to be the Tigers' playmaker...He turned in solid performances in scrimmages against North Garland and Dallas Samuell last week...Rusk, led by RB Chaston Bennett, QB Kody Stanley and FB Ray Foreman proved that they could score a lot of points last year as well as in the preseason and that may not change against a Tiger team that returns just 10 men off of last year's team and is predicted to finish last in District 10-4A.
Quitman Bulldogs (0-0) at Bullard Panthers (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Panther Stadium in Bullard
Coaches — Ronald Callahan, Quitman; Shannon Wilson, Bullard
Last Week — This is the first game of the season for both teams.
Next Week — Redwater at Quitman; Bullard at White Oak
Game Notes: The Panthers routed the Bulldogs 50-6 a year ago in the opener and Bullard looks to be the better team by a wide margin, at least on paper, once again...Bulldog QB Jesus Ramirez is a duel threat and could give the Panther defense a good workout...With QB Colton Mebane, WR Haden Bryant and RB Houston Alexander returning, Quitman will have their hands full if they are to slow down the high-octane Panther offense.
Quinlan-Ford Panthers (0-0) at Troup Tigers (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Herrington Stadium in Bullard (Brook Hill Classic)
Coaches — Todd Wallace, Quinlan-Ford; Dennis Alexander, Troup
Last Week — This is the season opener for both teams.
Next Week — Nevada Community at Quinlan-Ford; West Rusk at Troup.
Game Notes: Friday's game will be Dennis Alexander's first as mentor of the Tigers...Alexander ranks No. 4 in wins for Texas high school football coaches...He previously coached at Harleton in northeast Texas...Wallace is also in his first game as the Panthers' bench boss...With 16 starters back, Quinlan-Ford has been tabbed to finish second in District 14-3A and could give the Tigers a big test in this Week 0 matchup...The Tigers may need another week to fully assimilate the changes that Alexander brought in, but with 26 kids back from last year there is a lot to like about this year's group of Tigers.
