JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville head volleyball coach Billie Walley was greeted by 20 young ladies — members of the incoming fifth, sixth and seventh grade classes — bright and early Monday morning as the Jacksonville Volleyball Camp opened up its four-day run at the Jacksonville Gymnasium.
A separate, afternoon, session attracted an additional 29 girls, middle school agers, which Walley said is the most that have attended her camp in at least the past four years.
“We've had a very nice turnout, I'm impressed Walley said. “This shows that the girls are interested in the sport of volleyball.”
Walley said that in her opinion it is imperative that girls get involved in volleyball at an early age.
“If girls can start working on and develop their skill set early on, they will be ready to play and compete when they get to middle school in the seventh grade,” Walley said. “So, that's one of our goals in camp, to help prepare these young ladies for middle school, and then eventually high school volleyball.”
Most of the girls in the early session, the majority of which are fifth graders, are from Jacksonville, but there were also three girls from Rusk in attendance.
Walley said that she recognized plenty of faces Monday and that having a solid core of returnees is a positive sign.
“It's always good to see many of the same kids back year after year,” she said. “Our returning kids have really stepped up, skill wise, and you can see their game improving.”
Assisting Walley with the camp, were Sherri Newbury and Kim Crowley, JISD assistant coaches and Alana Jeffcoat, who is member of the Fight'n Maiden volleyball squad.
Crowley, in her first year with the JISD, will be teaching at Nichols Intermediate School, and will be serving as an assistant varsity volleyball, basketball and softball coach.
Walley said that she is also very grateful for the parental support that the JHS Volleyball Camp has received.
