Guard down Panthers, 50-44, to win town bragging right

Tyler — TYLER – Game seven of the annual Floyd Wagstaff Holiday Basketball Classic was not only the third match up of The Brook Hill Guard and the Bullard Panthers series, but a reunion of sorts.

New Panther head coach, Shane Chambless and his assistant Drew Barkley, found themselves coaching against Wally Dawkins, their former head mentor in high school at Whitehouse.

The Guard (5-8), took a 2-1 series with a 50-44 win over Bullard on Wednesday night at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Guard came out smoking to take a 15-2 advantage behind a stout defensive effort and some sharp-shooting from the entire team.

“It seems as though it’s either feast of famine,” Dawkins said about the Guard’s quick start. “We have got the kid’s to take the shots, and can make the shots but we get on a roll and then cool off, and it’s been that way so far this season.”

Bullard however battled back to close the first quarter gap to 15-10, and overcame Brook Hill in the second quarter for a 24-22, Panther advantage.

The fourth quarter remained back-and-forth until freshman point guard, Grant Hanks took matters in to his own hands. Hanks hit back-to-back, 3-pointers to tie the game, and also regain the Brook Hill lead for the final time.

The first Hanks bomb tied the game at 37-37, and the 24-footer from the top of the key gave the Guard a 40-37 lead.

Hanks led all scorers in the game with 18 points, followed by 13 from  Austin Langemeier

Bullard’s Taft Rose scored his team–high, 13th-point of the contest with a short jumper in the lane that shaved the Brook Hill lead to 40-39.

Offensively for the Panthers, Rose got support help from Corbin Howard and Chandler Clark with 8 points apiece, and Scott Lowrie added six for the Panthers.

Brook Hill senior guard, Langemeier went two-of-three after being fouled from three-point range to make it 43-39 at the 4:05 mark in the final quarter.

After Hanks made a run through the lane for a lay up and a 46-44 lead.

Senior guard, Carter Clements scored 8 points in the game but none more timely than a steal and converting the leaning jumper with 58-seconds left and a 48-44, Brook Hill cushion.
