Indian soccer team suffers loss in first district game

JACKSONVILLE —

Jacksonville’s mission was for its eight seniors to end their careers at the Tomato Bowl with a win Tuesday night.

Nacogdoches turned out to be party poopers though as the Dragons handed the Indians a 2-0 defeat — the Tribe’s first loss in District 35-4A play.

The Dragons (7-2 in district) used an aggressive, attacking offense to keep the pressure on the Indians, and the Indians (12-8-1, 7-1-1)...well, let’s just say the didn’t deliver their best effort.

A goal by Jonathan Fuentes off a deflection from about 15 yards out put the Dragons on the scoreboard first with 17:21 to play in the game.

The Dragons didn’t stop their as Nacogdoches punched another score in with 14:53 left in the match when Austin Davis pushed the ball past Indian goalkeeper, Daniel Posada, from around 10 yards out along the right side.

“Nacogdoches came ready to play and they came here to win and that’s exactly what they did tonight,” Jacksonville head coach, Randy Hammontree said. “We kept (trying) to force the ball into the middle and into our leading scorer (Daniel Forry) instead of attacking from the outside which is what we normally do to open up the middle. We got out of that rut for a while early in the last half, then we fell right back in it.”

The Tribe launched two shots inside the final five minutes of play that came close to getting past the Dragon goalie.

The first came with 4:26 to play when Cesar Truillo blasted a shot towards the goal from about 20 yards out on the right flank. The shot hooked left at the last moment, traveling wide of the goal.

Then, with 31 seconds to play, Mustafu Ziedan drilled a shot in from around 25 yards out that ended up in the bread basket of the Dragon keeper.

Nacogdoches outshot Jacksonville 10-5 in the final half — 16 to 12 for the match.

“I told the team (after the match) that we can’t get this one back and that we have to keep our heads up, gel as a team and get ready to go out Friday and win the district,” Hammontree said.

NOTES: Eight seniors, Jeff Landrum, Kevin Quiroz, Elias Silva, Rolando Alvarez, Liandro Taverea, Michael Green, Javier Guerrero and Daniel Posada were recognized before the match as a part of Senior Night festivities...prior to Tuesday’s contest, Jacksonville had outscored its district opponents by a combined score of 46-3 this season...the Indians close out the regular campaign at Diboll Friday.
