JACKSONVILLE — Nacogdoches scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Jacksonville, 2-0, in a District 35-4A soccer match played Tuesday night at the Tomato Bowl.
The Indians are now 12-8-1, 7-1-1 in conference, while the Dragons improve to 7-2 in district action.
The Indians struggled all night to get in the groove on offense, while the Dragons displayed an aggressive attack — Nacogdoches outshot the Indians 16 to 12 (10 to 5 in the decisive second half).
"Nacogdoches came ready to play and they came here to win and that's exactly what they did tonight," Jacksonville head coach, Randy Hammontree, said following the match. "We kept forcing the ball into the middle and into our leading scorer (Daniel Forry) instead of attacking from the outside. We got out of that rut for a while early in the last half, then we fell right back in it."
Jonathan Fuentes scored the Dragons' first goal, collecting a rebound and blasting the ball past Jacksonville goalkeeper, Daniel Posada, from about 15 yards out off right side. The score came with 17:23 to go in the game.
Less than two minutes lator the Dragons struck from almost the same spot with Austin Davis punching the ball in from about 10 yards out, right side.
Jacksonville closes out the regualr season at Diboll Friday night. The match is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
A win in that match will earn the Indians the district crown.
