JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville participated in the Ennis Varsity Tournament on Friday, providing the Indians and Maidens an opportunity to face competitors from the Metroplex area.
Mercer Day came away with the championship in boy’s singles to pace the Jacksonville effort.
Day defeated opponents from Dallas Skyline (6-4, 6-1), Red Oak (6-1, 6-2) and Waxahachie (6-7, 6-2, (10-2)) in route to the title match.
Day went on to topple Nicklas of Ennis in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Melody Melvin & Niesha Nays won second place in girl’s doubles.
Melvin & Nays polished off squads from Red Oak (6-0, 6-1), Ennis (6-0, 0-6, (10-7)), Whitehouse (6-1, 6-1) before falling to Skuza & Kilpatrick of Ennis (6-1, 6-4) in the finals.
In boy’s doubles, Dylan Hanna & Morgan Weaver went 2-1 on the day by besting teams from Red Oak (6-2, 6-20 and Forney (6-3, 6-3) before falling (6-1, 6-3) in the semi-finals to a pair of Ennis netters.
Alicia Coronilla & Elisha Carpenter also stumbled in the semi-finals — losing to a team from Ennis (6-0, 6-0) after earning victories over squads from Mabank (6-0, 6-3) and Waxahachie (6-7, 6-2, (10-2)) previously.
Other results involving Tribe tennis players include Spencer Jay & Michael Stirneman defeating foes from Red Oak (5-7, 6-3, (10-7)) before slipping in the second round to a group out of Ennis (6-3, 3-6, (10-7)).
Brenna Beavers & Isaac Montes also won their opener — against a pair from Mabank (6-2, 6-2) — eventually getting tripped up in the second round by a team from West Mesquite (6-4, 6-0). Beavers & Montes were competiting in mixed doubles.
In singles action, Kyle Crosby opened the day by outlasting an opponent from Dallas Skyline (6-3, 6-4). He then fell to a player out of Red Oak (6-3, 6-4).
Autumn Morris and Junita Holquin each dropped both of their singles matches.
Morris lost to opponents from Forney by scores of 6-3, 6-2 and Whitehouse by 6-1, 6-0 counts.
Holquin was knocked off by a player from Whitehouse (6-0, 6-0) and an Ennis (6-4, 6-3) netter.
Jacksonville returns to the courts Friday, playing in at the Corsicana Tournament.
