EASTLAND, Texas —
The Rusk Marlins, playing in the Texas Teenage Baseball Association Junior Boys Baseball State Tournament in Eastland, Texas, rebounded from an opening-round loss to topple the Brownwood Rangers, 16-5, on Wednesday night.
After enduring a one-day delay due to rain, the Marlins wasted little time in getting on the score board as Rusk plated three runs in the opening segment.
Unfortunately, Brownwood came right back and tied the score in their half of the inning.
The game stayed close — the Marlins led 5-4 heading into the fourth inning — until the Rusk sticks erupted for nine runs in the top of the fourth to extend their advantage to 14-4.
The Marlins added a pair of insurance runs in the final frame, ballooning their margin to 16-5.
Rusk punched out 10 hits in the game as Hayden Dewbre paced the Marlins with three hits, followed by Justin Largent and Dillon Hines with a pair of safeties a piece.
Also collecting a hit each for Rusk was Drew Walley, Jacob Tylich and Austin Bellew.
All of the Rusk starters were able to score at least one run in the contest with Dewbre plating on three occasions and Hines, Walley, Tylich and Justin Daughety scoring two runs each.
Dewbre led Rusk in runs batted in with three while Hines, Largent collected two each.
Walley, Tylich, Daughety and Vijay Stingley knocked in a run a piece for the Rusk cause.
In Rusk’s first game of the tournament on Monday evening, the Marlins and the Anson Tigers braved a four-hour rain delay, before the Tigers were able to post an 11-0 decision over the Marlins.
Daughety and Hines each had a hit in the game with both men getting on base on two occasions.
The Marlins were scheduled to face a familiar foe — their hometown rivals, the Rusk Eagles — in an elimination game slated for Thursday afternoon, weather permitting.
The Eagles also lost their opening round game, falling to the Hawley Bearcats 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
