Lon Morris College combined a fantastic night at the charity stripe with stellar 3-point shooting to hand Lamar State-Port Arthur (LSPA) a 73-63 defeat in a Region XIV affair played at the Vivian and Bob Smith Events Center Saturday evening.
The Bearcats shot 66.7-percent (24-of-36) from the line and buried treys at a 39.1-percent clip (9-of-23) to ground the Seahawks.
On the flip side, LSPA went to the line only 22 times and hit just 11 shots (50-percent). The Seahawks could not buy a basket from beyond the arc, going 0-13 from three-point land.
The win is especially sweet as LMC (13-11, 5-8 in Region XIV) not only snuffs out a four-game conference losing skid with Saturday’s victory, but avenges a 67-65 loss to LSPA that occurred on Nov. 21, 2009 in Port Arthur and was also able to send the large homecoming crowd home with a smile on their faces.
After trailing 30-29 to open the second half, the Green and White went on an 11-0 run to open the final segment to pull in front 40-30 with 16:57 left in the game.
Jorge Redmon sparked the ‘Cats by scoring six points during the spurt, an opening field goal and four points from the charity line.
Redmon, a freshman guard out of Arlington, lead all players with 22 points in the game and made a case for player of the week honors after scoring 28 points in LMC’s game on Wednesday.
The Seahawks (15-9, 5-8) mounted a mild bid at a comeback with about six minutes to go in the game by peeling off a 7-0 run. Keenen Doyle scored a deuce on the front end of the gain and closed the run out on an old fashioned 3-point play that made the score 55-52 in favor of the ‘Cats. Von Jones sandwiched a LSPA bucket in between Doyle’s shots to account for the remaining Seahawk points.
LMC took control from that point on as the ‘Cats scored the next four points on a put back by Travis Jones and a reverse scoop from the baseline by Antonie Brown.
The Seahawks managed to hang tough and even pulled to within six points on a couple of occasions in the final three minutes, but could get no closer to victory.
Greg Chiasson and Jones also hit in double figures for the ‘Cats, draining 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Chiasson and Jones each nailed three shots from downtown. Jones also added eight boards to his night’s work for LMC.
Roman Vaughn topped out at 16 points for LSPA while Dion Walters added a dozen points to compliment his seven rebounds.
LMC hits the road this week, journeying to Lee College Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. encounter with the Rebels before traveling to Kilgore Saturday to face the Rangers at 4 p.m.
