BULLARD —
After eliminating one District 19-3A team (Lorena) in last weekend's best-of-three Class 3A, Region III Area series, the Bullard Panthers will face another of the Waco-area loop's units when it takes on top-ranked Waco Robinson in a best-of-three regional quarterfinal series that is slated to open at 7 p.m. Friday night at Lions Stadium in Ennis.
Game 2, and a rubber game (if needed), will be played in Ennis starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
After falling(7-4) in the opener to Lorena on Friday evening, Bullard (22-8) bounced back to win twice (6-4, 9-8) last Saturday to earn a date against the Rockets (24-1).
The Panthers, who are coached by John Cobb — Chris Litton and Judd Guidry are the assistant coaches — got excellent pitching from Zach Eschberger and Cody Goode, while Cameron Hallford and Holden Bryant did most of the damage with the bats for the Panthers, who are the District 17-3A champions.
Bullard and Robinson are no strangers on the diamond as it was the Rockets that ended the Panthers' playoff trip last year when Robinson took two from Bullard to win a best-of-three Area series.
Robinson, coached by Bryan Kent, has lost just once this season.
That defeat came on March 3 when the Rockets fell, 7-2, to West.
The Rockets, who downed Diboll (2-1, 7-1) last weekend in Area action, are led by Chad Hollinsworth, a University Texas-Austin signee, who was the 19-3A District Most Valuable Player last year.
Hollingsworth picked up the win in Game 2 against Diboll. He gave up one earned run in seven innings while whiffing 10 and walking just one.
He posted an 11-2 record last season and had a playoff win over the Panthers.
“They (Robinson) have a class program,” Cobb said. “They have a lot of pitching, some great hitters and an outstanding coaching staff.
“We will have to be on our game and definitely will ot get away with some of the errors (that we made against Lorena).”
The winner of the Bullard-Robinson series will advance to play either Huffman-Hargrave or Bridge City late next week in the regional semi-final round.
