Bearcats hold baseball tryouts for ‘07 season

Lon Morris College baseball coach Josh Stewart was looking for a few good men during Lon Morris’ baseball tryouts on Thursday at Bearcat Park.

“We are always looking for players,” said Stewart, who is entering his fourth year at Lon Morris. “You want good players, good people to come to school at Lon Morris. It gives us a good opportunity to finish out our roster. It gives us a good chance to see some kids that might have been overlooked.”

Thursday was the second day of tryouts, with the first day on Sunday and the final day at 9 a.m. on June 8.

Stewart and assistant coach Clay Adams evaluated players on fielding, pitching, throwing and hitting during the tryouts. Stewart said Lon Morris will workout around 100 players total and will keep around five.

The Bearcats finished the 2006 season with a 15-37 record.

“We lost some really good pitchers last year to four-year schools, so obviously we are looking for some help on the mound,” Stewart said. “We’re also looking for a couple of outfielders to finish up.”

Although next season’s roster will have new names and faces, Stewart said the Bearcats are not re-building.

“I think it’s always a re-tooling process in junior college,” Stewart said. “Last year was probably my most talented team. We had some great wins, but we underachieved in conference.”

Stewart said — above all else — he is looking for student-athletes.

“I want good, serious students,” he said. “I want good, morally sound young men and I want great baseball players.”
