BROWNSBORO — It was Bullard’s turn to dominate. In recent years, Bullard teams have time getting wins against Brownsboro, especially on the road.

Tuesday night, Bullard struck a blow for equality with both varsity teams taking wins over Brownsboro.

Lady Panthers 37, Bearettes 35

“I can’t remember the last time a Bullard team won in Brownsboro,” said Bullard head girls coach Greg Gay. “It was a barrier to us, we would always find a way to lose. This time we found a way to win.”

“We knew Brownsboro would be tough, they had just lost to Canton. We got a late play where Calli Miller passed the ball down to Danielle Heithoff for a bucket with seven seconds left,” Gay said. “I had been asking them to do that all night.”

Miller had 12 points and Heithoff 11 to lead the scorers for No. 18-state ranked Bullard.

The Lady Panthers traded hoops with the Bearettes all night.

“We had a five point lead briefly. Brownsboro had a little lead too, it was back-and-forth. We were just glad to get the win, especially on the road,” Gay said.

Bullard was 17 of 34 from the free throw line. The 50 percent shooting alarmed the coach.

“We could have had a 10 to 12 point lead if we make free throws,” Gay said.

The Lady Panthers are 4-0 leading the district. Canton and Athens are tied for second with 3-1 records.

Panthers 52, Bears 44

The Bullard boys jumped back into the district race with an important win at Brownsboro. After beginning district play with a loss, the Panthers rallied to post a 1-1 mark after two games.

“Our defense was a big difference in the game. We held 16 points in the first half. We forced a lot of turnovers, we did not score off that many like we should have. We had a rough night shooting the ball,” said Ryan Tomlin, Bullard head boys’ basketball coach.

The Panthers were up 25-16 at the half and continued to hold an advantage despite not scoring well.

Lance Anding and Austin Camp tied for high point honors with 10 each in the game.

Anding was limited in the second half due to foul trouble.

“It feels good to get a win and go 1-1 in district. This district is balanced, if you have an off night, you will probably lose. We stepped up late and made the shots we had to make. I’m proud of our performance in the game,” Tomlin said.
