RUSK —
With NFL all-pro defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh (Detroit Lions) in attendance, the inaugural Cody Glenn Football Camp, held Saturday at Rusk's Eagle Stadium, gave camp goers not one, but two, NFL veterans to learn some of the finer points of football from.
Suh, the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft who played along Glenn at Nebraska, handled much of the defensive instruction, while Glenn focused on providing instruction on the offensive end.
Suh, who has quickly developed a reputation for delivering a spicy-aggressive style of play, didn't exactly handle those in the morning session (high school age students) with kid gloves — in fact, in one drill he demanded that participants drop down and give him 10 push ups if they were guilty of jumping off sides.
On a hot summer day on the artificial playing surface, there's nothing like push ups to get someone's attention in a hurry.
Suh demonstrated various techniques and shared bits of defensive wisdom with the camp goers.
He reminded the kids that as a defensive player you are always going to be at a disadvantage because you don't know what play is being called or what direction that the play will be run in.
But Suh also revealed that there is joy in knowing that in the quarterback's mind he knows the defensive players are always coming after him and that that can be a defensive's players big advantage.
“To have one of my closest friends (Suh), an all-pro NFL player come down here to Rusk to help me with the camp means a lot to me,” Cody Glenn said. “And I know that having him here means a lot to the people.”
Glenn, an all-state talent at running back as a Rusk Eagle, said that he was pleased with the first edition of what he plans on making an annual event.
“I think that the kids that showed up brought a lot of enthusiasm and energy,” Glenn said. “I would have liked to have had more kids here and we will get started advertising things earlier next year.
“But, it has been a good day, really good.”
The camp drew students from Rusk, Jacksonville, Alto and Liberty High Schools.
Jacksonville junior, Lekendrick Anderson, said that got his monies worth from the camp.
“As soon as I heard about this camp I knew that it would be a great opportunity to learn some football and I wanted to be here,” Anderson said. “It went well and we just have to go back to our schools and keep working our butts off and focus on getting better.”
Rusk sophomore Wade Burris, spent a lot of time working with Glenn on the offensive end of the field.
“I learned a lot about back peddling and following down the line,” Burris said. “It's awesome to be able to work one-on-one with Cody Glenn.”
As for Glenn, he said it was a tremendous feeling to be able to give something back to the Rusk community.
“East Texas and Rusk have always meant a lot to me and have been monumental to my success,” Glenn said. “It's important to me to give back as much as I can.”
Glenn, a linebacker, has played for Washington, Indianapolis and Baltimore.
