JACKSONVILLE —
It was Christmas in March for the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs Friday night at Fightin’ Maiden Field.
Jacksonville committed three errors in both the third and seventh innings with Kilgore taking advantage of Jacksonville’s gifts by scoring two runs in each segment to down the Maidens 4-2 in the District 14-4A opener for both teams.
The Maidens are now 10-9-2, 0-1 in conference play, while the Lady Bulldogs up their worksheet to 6-11, 1-0 as a result of the win.
Things went south in the field for the Maidens in the third when Kilgore’s Blair Ware reached base on an infield error by the home team that came with one out.
Becca Stokes, who turned out to be the Maiden slayer, in more ways than one — Stokes went 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored while also pitching two innings of relief, striking out six of the eight Jacksonville batters that she faced to earn a save — then stepped up and ripped an opposite-field base hit to deep right field which brought Ware into to score. There was also a two-base error on the Maiden rightfielder on the play to give Kilgore an added boost.
The Lady Bulldogs then plated their second run when Jenae Baggett singled to left, driving Stokes in. Baggett went all the way to second on a fielding mistake by the leftfielder during the play.
Crow then retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Jacksonville, who continues league play by traveling to Lindale on Tuesday, added one run in the bottom half of the frame when Paitlyn Taylor led off with a single to left and was then moved into scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Jessey Lumpkins.
Katelyn Standley drove Taylor in to score from second when she stroked the first of three doubles she would hit on the night. Standley, a freshman catcher, went 3-for-3 with a RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases to spark Jacksonville on offense.
The Maidens tied the game in the fifth on a RBI single by Katelyn Arrington that brought Standley in to score from third — Ashlii Jennings’ infield hit moved Standley, who led off with a two-base smash from second to the hot corner.
Kilgore sealed the deal when the first two Lady Bulldogs to bat in the seventh reached on Maiden errors.
Stokes then was hit by a pitch to fill the sacks.
Baggett followed and reached base on an error as well with two Kilgore runners crossing the dish on the play.
“We gave up four unearned runs on six errors out there tonight and it is hard to win ball games that way,” Jacksonville head coach, Jason Mize, said following the game.
Crow went on to sit down the next three Lady Bulldogs she faced to end the segment.
Standley got aboard in the bottom of the final inning by pounding out her third double to the corner in left, but unfortunately for the Maidens the remaining Jacksonville hitters in the inning fell victim to Stokes’ salty pitching performance.
“We hit the ball well in spots, but we didn’t jump on their starter (Val Kornegan) like we should have, “ Mize said. “We swung at some bad pitches and made some bad choices (at the plate) and we have to clean that up if we expect to compete.”
Kornegan picked up the win in the circle for Kilgore while Crow incurred the loss for Jacksonville.
Crow scattered four hits over seven innings, struck out four and walked four.
