The Jacksonville Fight'n Indians launched their 2012-13 basketball campaign on Friday night at Lobo Coliseum in Longview.
The Tribe and the Lobos were both without the services of their student athletes who were involved in football.
Nevertheless, Jacksonville didn't miss a beat as the Tribe belted the Lobos, 73-54.
Ozzian Clairborne earned a double-double by scoring 18 points and pulling down a dozen rebounds.
Raybon Ridan just missed a triple double. He drilled in 15 points, had 11 assists and snagged eight boards.
Daytron Thompson also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points.
The game was tied at nine after one quarter, but the Tribe broke things wide open in the second period when they outscored the Lobos, 25-14.
“This was a good win for us,” Jacksonville head coach Brent Kelley said. “Three years ago there is no way we could have gone into Longview's gym and beat them with just our basketball-only kids.
“We've gotten better and developed depth and for us to win big on the road without many of our regulars who were coming out of football says a lot about where our program is at overall.”
Kelley said the football athletes returned to practice on Saturday morning and that he expects them to be ready to go when the Indians return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday against Brownsboro. That game will take place at UT-Tyler.
NOTE: Jacksonville was originally scheduled to host Center tonight...That game has been canceled at the request of Center due to the Roughriders' participation in the state football playoffs.
