Chapel Hill eclipses Lady Panthers in league lid lifter
NEW CHAPEL HILL — Chapel Hill pitcher, Halie Vance, fanned 15 Lady Panthers while stroking a double to guide the Lady Bulldogs to a 7-1 win over Bullard in the District 17-3A opener played in New Chapel Hill Tuesday evening. Vance held Bullard to just one hit, an Ashley Gwartney double.
Gwartney pitched a complete game for Bullard, allowing seven hits. Bullard returns home to face Spring Hill at 6 p.m. Friday while Chapel Hill is slated to host Gladewater at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Navarro wins opener in national tourney
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Matt Pressey scored a bucket off an offensive rebound with 29 seconds left in the game to spur Navarro College to a 66-65 victory over Middle Georgia College (28-4) in opening round action of the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (29-5), the Region XIV champions, were scheduled to face East Mississippi Community College (27-5) late Wednesday evening in a quarterfinal game. Pressey finished as the game’s leading scorer (23 points). Chase Harper added 13 points for the Bulldogs who earned their first win in national tournament play in school history on Tuesday.
Region XIV’s Lady Cards win in a breeze
SALINA, Kan. — Trinity Valley Community College began its quest for a national championship by walloping Walters State, 70-53, Tuesday in the opening round of the NJCAA Women’s Championship Tournament, being played at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan. this week. The Lady Cards (29-5) led by only two points, 30-28, at the break, but pulled away in the second half by hitting 55-percent of their shots form the field, including making 6-of-15 from beyond the arc. Gloria Brown’s double-double (16 points and 13 rebounds) sparked the Lady Cards, the Region XIV champions. TVCC advances to face the top-seed, Jefferson County (30-1), at 6 p.m. tonight. TVCC is attempting to win its sixth women’s national basketball title.
Bullard Relays to be contested Saturday
BULLARD — Eleven boys and eleven girls track and field squads will descend upon Panther Stadium early Saturday morning as the 2010 Bullard Relays are scheduled to take place. Action begins at 9 a.m. with the start of the 3200M run, shot put, discus, high jump and pole vault. Long jump and triple jump will start at 9:15 a.m. with running events set to begin at noon. The meet will close around 3 p.m. with an awards ceremony.
Volunteers still needed for Bullard track and field meet
BULLARD — Bullard High School Athletic Booster Club members are encouraged to come out to Panther Stadium at 8 a.m. Saturday to volunteer to perform varies duties associated with the 2010 Bullard Relays. Around 500 student-athletes are expected at the meet. Volunteers need not stay the entire day. Lunch for the participants is scheduled for 11 a.m. with a significant amount of volunteer help needed during that time frame.
