BEEVILLE —
Jacksonville College moved into a three-way tie for second place in the NJCAA Region XIV South standings after topping Coastal Bend College 72-68 in Beeville Wednesday evening.
The Jaguars now stand 14-5, 5-3 Region XIV, and are tied with Coastal Bend (11-4, 5-3) and Lamar State-Port Arthur (5-3 in conference).
The Cougars led 28-27 at intermission but that lead was quickly erased as the final half opened up.
"We started the second half on an 8-0 run, with Daniel Skinner and Tyrell Springer getting back-to-back old fashioned three-point plays and Devon Anderson hitting a pair of free throws," Jacksonville head coach, Jody Bailey said. "That gave us the spark and the confidence that we needed."
The win was JC's fourth-straight in conference and it didn't come easy, but at the end of the night Bailey seemed fulfilled by his team's play.
"Give Coastal credit for playing well," Bailey said. "We made our free throws when we needed to and fought through all the adversities of making this near 800-mile trip by staying focused on our goal.
"I think we found out who we really are as a team and what we are all capable of doing."
The Jags return home to host last-place Blinn at 4 p.m. Saturday.
