JACKSONVILLE —
The Jacksonville Fight'n Maiden cross country team won its first meet of the season Saturday when it out finished Henderson and Tatum to win the Henderson Invitational.
Tempestt Silvers was the first to cross the line in the 2-mile race. She was clocked in 18:54.
Christy Belk (19:55) was fourth, followed by Lindsay Johnston (20:33) in sixth and Ester Botello who ran a 20:34 to come in seventh.
Victoria Servin wound up eleventh, posting a final time of 20:34.
Rounding out the varsity runners for Jacksonville was Jackie Garcia (12th, 21:12).
With the Henderson run the team's final outing before the District 16-4A Meet, which will take place at Jacksonville Middle School on Oct. 25, the strong finish was just what the doctor ordered according to Maidens' head coach, Kiff Wiemers.
“This win should really give us a shot in the arm heading into the district meet,” he said. “All of our girls medaled, so it was a complete effort and that was good to see.”
Saturday's race was contested over a 2-mile configuration.
The Maidens had been used to running in in 3-mile events, and the cut-back in distance seemed to be to the squad's liking.
“Although this was our first 2-mile race of the year, I really think running the 3-mile races got us ready for the 2-mile race over in Henderson,” Wiemers said. “I think what is more important than the actual win, was when I went back and compared this year's times to last year's times at the same point, we are running much faster this year.”
Sub-varsity: Kim Cruz (22:36) came in third in the junior varsity girls' division, with Megan Rainey (24:15) taking sixth place.
