JACKSONVILLE —
Today will be Day 5 of fall drills for the Jacksonville Indians and will mark the first time that the Tribe will work out in full pads.
The first four days of workouts have gone off without a hitch, according to Chris Taber, head football coach.
“Things have been going well for us,” Taber said. “The kids have been working hard so far and have been accepting the new things that we have been teaching.
“I’m pleased and I feel that we are ahead of where the team was at this point last year.”
As the old saying goes, often putting on the pads will sererate the men from the boys.
Mike Waldie, JHS defensive coordinator, who formally served as head coach at Luling High School, says that he he has seen kids’ drive and output go up and down once the hitting begins.
“It’s funny, you never know what to expect, really,” Waldie said. “Some kids that look great in shorts and T-shirts don’t look so great in pads, and I have seen kids that didn’t do well in shorts and T-shirts really step up once they get those pads on, so it can go either way and I think that is why coaches say tmhat they can never really tell what they have until the pads are put on.”
