NACOGDOCHES — The District 35-4A playoff picture became a bit murkier Tuesday night as a result of Jacksonville and Nacogdoches playing to a 1-1 draw.
The Nacogdoches girls got on the Dragon Stadium scoreboard first when they were able to sneak one past Maiden keeper, Kali Finch in the 37th minute.
Jacksonville worked feverishly to avoid defeat and with 26 ticks left, Amber Brannan drilled a shot in to tie things up. Alex Barrientos had the assist on the play.
Maidens head coach, Kiff Wiemers, said he was disappointed his team could not pull out a win, but at the same time was thankful the Maidens didn’t encounter defeat in the pineywoods as well.
“This one (match) was all about a lot of missed opportunities on our part, “ he said. “We left three or four points out on the field; but a tie is always better than a loss.”
The Maidens are now 8-8-6 overall, 5-2-1 in district while the Lady Dragons stand 5-0-2 in league encounters.
Jacksonville closes out the regular season at 6 p.m. Friday against Diboll, a team they defeated 3-0 on Feb. 23.
Wiemers stated that it is his understanding that his team must keep Diboll off the scoreboard while scoring at least three goals of their own and have Nacogdoches defeat Palestine on Friday for the Maidens to finish the district race in second place.
