A few weeks ago, I got a call from my daughter, Melanie, who lives near Dallas. She was very upset.
Her gynecologist had just told her that she had about a 1 percent chance of getting pregnant. They had been trying to have a baby for some time and had even tried two artificial insemination procedures with no results. This latest news was very upsetting for her.
We talked awhile and reminded each other that with God all things are possible, and all things happen on His time schedule. We knew what the doctors said, but we decided to wait and see what God had to say. He is the great physician and the final authority.
We talked and e-mailed almost daily, and kept the prayers going. She called two weeks later and guess what? She had three positive pregnancy tests that day. She saw her doctor, and that 1 percent chance changed to a 100 percent reality. This verse from Luke 18 came alive: “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
Now once a week we receive an update on the progress of “Baby Pitts.” Today was week eight, and we received a picture showing the size and characteristics of the fetus. What a miracle! The baby is about 5/8 inch long, about the size of a kidney bean. The baby’s hands are flexed and meet over his/her heart. The knee joints are formed. The brain is forming neural pathways.
(As a side note, how could anyone ever argue that this is not a living child.)
So, the doctor said she had a 1 percent chance. God said it was His time for them to have their baby. It makes us wonder why we ever doubt His sovereignty. The longer we live, the more we see His hand in every part of our lives. The Bible tells us that there is a time to be born. (Ecclesiastes 3:2) We will never experience true peace and joy until we “acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign.” (Daniel 4:25)
Melanie had been praying for a baby all this time, believing that God would provide. She held on to her faith and trust and hope. The doctor’s words were discouraging and upsetting, but we knew that they were not “the final answer.” It has been said that it is darkest just before the dawn. And we know that “whoever lives by the truth comes into the light.” (John 3:21)
We believed the truth of God’s love, and the light overcame the darkness. God is never late, nor is He ever early. His timing is perfect. Until we accept that truth, we will live at the mercy of the world and the thoughts of the flesh. (Psalm 62:8) tells us to trust in Him at ALL times. Therein lies our peace and our joy and our hope.
God has blessed us with a new member of our family. In a few months the baby will be born. The years of praying and hoping for a baby will be replaced by the miracle that only God can provide. May we never forget the lesson — Trust God and wait for His promises to come true. For, “Blessed are all who wait for Him!” (Isaiah 30:18)
