Response to ‘irked’

The writer who is irked by the alcohol proposal needs to stop and consider a few things.

Others of your own faith are unsure that the Bible supports your church’s position on abstinence. William Paul Franks, licensed minister of Assemblies of God, holds that: “This position brings unwanted division among the church and unneeded confusion to those that do not yet believe in Christ as Lord.”

Instead of using Cuney as an example of the benefits of local alcohol sales, a truer picture would be gained by looking at Lufkin and Rusk.

Upstanding, community-minded individuals with the intent of improving Jacksonville formed “Progress Jacksonville,” not “morally bankrupt” people.

“Judge not ...”

I will be glad to make my own decisions concerning my morality and to buy alcohol in my hometown. If you call me “morally bankrupt,” then I am in good company with Jesus, who made wine out of water; the Catholic religion that uses wine in their communions; and the Jews, who drink with no religious restrictions. As a matter of fact, the only religion that seriously bans alcohol is Islam, and I don’t want “Sharia” law in my town!

Your congregation will benefit a lot more if you will gain the courage to speak out about fast food and the sin of gluttony!

  • Is it 40 years too late?

U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) recently introduced a resolution designating March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. What a great way to show our Vietnam veterans how proud we are of them. It’s about time.
But is it too little, too late?

  • Since you asked, recommended reading, gun rights and taking back Congress

Do you believe the Republicans will take back both houses of Congress in the 2010 elections?
I think it possible but not probable.

  • Our way of life deserves your involvement

I have been so blessed to have run for the Republican nomination for State Representative District 11.
As you followed the campaign you recognized that a solid conservative vote was cast for our platform of limited government and less taxes.

  • We always spring forward in the newsroom

I’m very human, and so I am very apt to make mistakes.
We’re all prone to make mistakes, I guess. It’s part of being human.
Not everyone makes mistakes on the front page of the paper, though.

  • Teach pride

Jacksonville is one of the most unique, special communities in the state — and yet in so many ways our problems are the same as everyone else’s.
But they don’t have to be.

  • There is only one now ...

During the course of my childhood, there had been three — three of the most stately, majestic trees in west Jacksonville. Trees that were so beautiful they even named the street “Sycamore” in honor of them.

  • Come hell or high water

Call it fearmongering if you will, but the ruin of our great nation is staring us right in the face. Already standing on the precipice of calamity due to the last five years of rampant spending and record-setting deficits, the Obama administration and the Democratic majority in Congress are a whisper (and a few back-alley deals) away from forcing through non-essential healthcare reform and expending further trillions that our country simply does not have to spend.

  • There is always two sides to a vote

As always there is two sides to a vote. I’d like to state my own personal position.
I’m for off-premises consumption (of alcohol). It is the people’s choice if they wish to participate.

  • Check the facts!

In last Tuesday’s paper, it quoted Jacksonville Pastor Darin Wood as saying he lived in Corsicana when they went “wet” and “said the city is still running deficit budgets across the board.”
