Letter: City of Jacksonville needs to do more than ‘stand pat’

Headline in your Friday, January 2, 2009, newspaper: “City celebrates 2008; looks to stand pat in coming year.”

The article about “Standing Pat” further reported that City Manager Raissi said: “...discussions have been had regarding a city master plan, but it was decided that Jacksonville just can’t afford one at this time. The document could cost the city as much as $250,000.”

Satchel Paige, former MLB pitcher, is quoted: “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.” Satchel is right; Tyler, Henderson, Palestine and other east Texas cities are gaining on and passing Jacksonville. The question is: Can we afford not to have a Master Plan? Jacksonville will “Stand Pat” unless we adequately invest in our future, and a Master Plan is one document that is worthy of investment.
