JACKSONVILLE —
Editor’s note: A Jacksonville resident has been reviewing movies for friends for several years and has offered to share his thoughts with Daily Progress readers. His reviews come in personal letters to his nicknamed friend, Spud Nut. Our reviewer is Tater Tot, so consequently, the movies get ratings based on potatoes.
Spud Nut,
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (rated PG, 121 minutes) stars Nicholas Cage as Balthazar, a 1,300 year old disciple of Merlin the Magician, and Jay Baruchel as David, the modern day heir apparent with the power to destroy the evil Morgana.
Their teacher/student partnership is an enjoyable magic carpet ride for summer entertainment.
Alfred Molina is an evil accomplice of Morgana, and he contests Cage and Baruchel in a series of mighty supernatural battles to let loose Morgana upon the world again.
Baruchel plays his underdog part quite well in this film just like he did in She’s Out of My League.
This time his pretty love interest is Teresa Palmer.
In this story he is a nerdy physics student at New York City University.
His knowledge of electricity comes in handy as he learns the arts of becoming a sorcerer.
The movie takes its title from an animated musical score in Walt Disney’s 1940 film, Fantasia.
The classic little tale starring Mickey Mouse was set to the classical music of Paul Dukas.
The same scene is delightfully repeated this time in live action, recounting how the apprentice tries to cast a spell that gets out of control.
After seeing The Sorcerer’s Apprentice once, I am looking for an excuse to see it over again, which is the definition of a three potato rated movie.

Rarely in our country's history have non-elected officials had a profound effect on public policy. While rare, it does happen from time to time.

Just Ask Janet: Kudos to the engines behind the hit parade
I went to the Christmas Parade Thursday night, and I am so tickled to tell you that it was wonderful! I say kudos to the Chamber of Commerce and all those who participated in the parade for making this year’s event so much fun.

Don’t outsource tax collections
Received my letter from the appraisal district, very alarming. It seems someone (little/flowers) is discussing to combine the appraisal district and the county tax office.
