The East Texas Daylily Society hosts well-known horticulturist and author Steven Chamblee at the Tyler Rose Garden Center at 2 p.m. Sunday. The North Cherokee Water Supply Corporation will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the corporate office on the corner of U.S. 69 and FM 177 in Mount Selman.



TUESDAY

Woodmen Youth Camp informational meeting held

Woodmen Youth Camp informational meeting will be on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Woodmen building, 1800 College Ave. Youth members and guests are welcome and refreshments will be served.



Groundwater Management Area 11 meets

The groundwater conservation districts located wholly or partially in Groundwater Management Area 11 will hold a joint planning meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Room 119 (Commissioners Room) in Nacogdoches City Hall, 202 E. Pilar St., in Nacogdoches.

Jacksonville Chamber holds Business After Hours

The Jacksonville Library will host Business After Hours 5:15-6:15 p.m. April 15. The event is held by the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce to give business people in Jacksonville an opportunity to network and meet people from other businesses. Door prizes will be awarded. The Texas Trappers and Fur Hunters will meet April 15-17 at the Cherokee County Expo Center on Loop 456 in Jacksonville.



JISD holds registration for credit by exam/exam for acceleration

JISD students interested in Credit by Exam/Exam for Acceleration tests from the University of Texas at Austin for grades Kindergarten-12th will be offered in Kilgore on June 9,10 and 11 and on July 6, 7 and 8. Students may register with their school counselor from March 29-April 15.



East Texas Avengers meet

East Texas Avengers Chapter  of Texas Motorcycle Rights Assoc. will hold their regular monthly meeting Thursday  at 7pm. at  Lupe's Mexican Restaurant 517 E, R usk St. in Jacksonville. Topics on this month's agenda include :finalizing details for the Ride for Relay April 17, Motorcycle safety and Awareness Month, upcoming Red Cross Memorial Run and Cross Placement Ceremony May 1 and other upcoming events. Garden Club holds flower show

The Jacksonville Garden Club presents “God’s Country” 1-5 p.m. April 16 at the Jacksonville Public Library, 502 S Jackson St. The small standard flower show is open to the public, and admission is free.



APRIL 17

Spring Clean Up Day set

The City of Jacksonville and Cherokee County have set April 17 as a clean-up day. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. various drop-off locations will accept the old junk you want to get rid of. You must present a current City of Jacksonville water bill and a driver’s license to leave things at the landfill. Rotary holds sporting clay shoot

The Jacksonville Rotary Club will hold a sporting clay shoot beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. April 17. Admission to the shoot is $50 per individual or $200 for a team of four. Individuals will be placed on a team. Shooting experience is not required. The day will include breakfast and lunch, awards and prizes. All proceeds will benefit Rotary scholarships for Jacksonville High School students.



First Baptist holds crawfish boil

First Baptist Church will hold a crawfish boil 10 a.m. til all the crawfish are gone on April 17. Cost is $4.75 per pound, and all proceeds benefit the FBC Student Ministries. For more information or to pre-order, call 903-586-4844.



Fishing tournament held to benefit Relay for Life

A fishing tournament and family day at the lake will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 17 on U.S. Highway 69 across from Rusk State Hospital. Admission is free, but for an extra charge, attractions include paddle boat rides, hayride, various carnival-style games, a fishing contest 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., fishing (catch and release only), face painting and concessions. All proceeds will benefit Cherokee County Relay for Life. Donations are also welcome.



Annual Ride for Relay Run and Bike Show held

The 5th Annual Ride For Relay Competitive Run and Bike Show will be held  Sat. April 17th with registration beginning at 8:00am at the T.J. Rusk Hotel on the square in downtown Rusk. First bike out at9:30am andlast bike in at 2:00pm. Bike Show begins at 3:00pm. You must ride in the Run to compete in the Bike Show.There willbe trophies for seven classes. Winner of theRun also gets a trophy plus half of the pot. Entry fee is $10 each for Run and Show. Awards presentation at 5:00pm followed by live music from the band " Without A Doubt ".Food and drinks available at the Hotel.Run and Bike Show will be conducted by East Texas Avengers Chapter of TMRA2  with proceeds to benefit  Relay For Life of Cherokee County and the American Cancer Society.For more info call 903-589-0950 or 903-721-1120.



Charmer dads hold ‘Chicken Thang’ BBQ sale

The Cherokee Charmer dads will hold the “Chicken Thang,” a BBQ chicken and brisket sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 17, under the over pass of Jackson Street over Commerce Street. The Cherokee County Youth Program camp holds registration

The Cherokee County Youth Program will hold registration for Jacksonville youth 5-14 years old 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 17 at Lon Morris College. The activities planned for the camp include field trips to two local colleges, arts and crafts, gymnastics, dance, reading and computer classes and music.Camp will also include breakfast and lunch each day for each participant. Garage sale held for Relay for Life

A garage sale benefitting Cherokee County Relay for Life will be held 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 17 in the Cardinal Health parking lot. Items include furniture, desk, baby clothes and lots more. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life.



Blacksmithing demonstrated at Mission Tejas

On April 17 basic blacksmithing will be demonstrated using coal forges and hand operated tools at Mission Tejas.  The hours will be from 10 am to 2 pm.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day with us.  We are located on Hwy 21 between Alto and Crockett in Houston County.



Faith Mission plans annual car show

The Faith Mission will hold its annual car show 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 17. Registration fee is $20. There will be fun and games for the kids and door prizes will be given. For more information, contact James 903-360-0793.



Meeting to find Miss Maydelle held

A meeting to launch this search will be held, on April 17 in Maydelle at Bertha's Cafe at 4p.m. All girls interested in becoming Miss Maydelle 2010 should attend. Chamber sets next quarterly gathering

The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce has set its next quarterly gathering for members at noon to 1 p.m. April 19 at the Norman Activity Center. A presentation by Austin Bank will be about identity theft, and new Chamber members will be presented. Cost is $10 for lunch, and advance reservations are required. Cherokee County Democrats meet

The Cherokee County Democratic Club will meet April 22 in Alto at the Yellow Jacket Cafe. Directions are south on U.S. 69 to Alto, at the light turn right onto San Antonio Street (Highways 294/21) and go west one block - the cafe is on your left. Desserts and beverages will be available. Please note that the location change is for this month only. Watch for announcements for May meeting. Democratic Women meet at 6:30 p.m. and the Cherokee County Democratic Club meets at 7:00 p.m. The program is about the June Democratic Convention. JHS Senior play on the way

The Jacksonville High School auditorium will host the 2010 senior play, “Annie Get Your Gun,” April 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and April 25 at 2 p.m. General admission is $5 and priority seating is $8. Advanced ticket sales are at Prosperity Bank, Southside Bank and Elaine’s.



APRIL 24

Cherokee County VFD holds fish fry and more

The Cherokee County Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fish fry 2-8 p.m., with food served at 4 p.m., April 24 at Taylor’s Chapel — take Hwy. 135 towards Troup. It will be about 8 miles on the left. In addition to the fish, there will be family fun, including fire trucks, antique cars, trucks and tractors on display; ETMC’s helicopter for kids to see; and other non-profit and public service organizations. All such groups are invited to join the day. Price will be $10 per adult, discounted for kids. All proceeds benefit the Cherokee County VFD. For more information, call Leslie Moore at 903-721-3316



Almond Tree offers CPR, First Aid classes

The Almond Tree Community Resource and Training Center will hold a CPR, first aid and AED (automatic defibrillator) certification classon April 24 at 1508 E. Rusk St. in Jacksonville. Cost for the class will be $55 per person if six or more total students register, $65 per person if fewer than six people register, and $40 for recertification. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited, so register early. The Almond Tree also offers on-site classes for industries. Master Gardeners hold plant sale

Mission Tejas State Park holds Folk Festival

Mission Tejas State Park, located on Hwy. 21 between Alto and Crockett, will have a Folk Festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24 at the park. Folk crafts and occupations wille be demonstrated by folks in period costumes, including the one-room school, bucket making, quilting, tool making and use, blacksmithing and more! A silent auction will be held, and the Texas Top Guns will perform wild west reinactments throughout the day. Chuck wagon grub will be available. Admission to the festival is free, but donations to the Mission Tejas State Park Association are welcome.



Maydelle Centennial Iron Horse committee meets

The Maydelle Centennial Iron Horse Celebration committee will be holding its next meeting on April 24 at Bertha's Cafe in Maydelle on Highway 84 at 4p.m. The Centennial celebration is being jointly planned with the Texas State Railroad. Chili’s will host Adopt-a-School night 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. April 26. Ten percent of proceeds that day will benefit JISD programs. Coupon must be presented to participate, and they are available at the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce office.

Cancer survivor dinner held

The 2010 Cherokee County Relay for Life will be on April 30 at Mauldin Field on the campus of Jacksonville High School. All survivors of cancer and any and all with a passion for defeating the disease of cancer are invited to become involved with this committee and this cause. RSH Relay for Life team holds raffle

The Rusk State Hospital Relay for Life team “Goal Line Defense” is holding a gift basket, quilt and lap quilt raffle for the Relay for Life fundraiser. Two drawings will be held for the gift baskets (one is of lesser value) that contail oil changes, beauty products, a hair cut, candle, candle chips, food gift cards, Bio Freeze products, a cell phone holder, Gourmet Garden items and various food coupons. The quilt and lap quilt are hand made. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The raffles will be held the night of the Relay. Tickets may be purchased at the RSH canteen, Lady Jane’s Antique Mall, and Lindsey’s Grocery in Alto.

 The Maydelle Vol Fire Department is now accepting donations of garage sale items for a garage and bakesale to be held on May 7 and 8.We also still have cookbooks for sale. All proceeds go to the Maydelle VFD. The Cherokee County AgriLife Extension Agency will hold the “Strengthening the Community” street fair in conjunction with the Rusk Singletary Memorial Library's annual summer reading program kick-off on June 8, in front of the Courthouse Annex and library on Henderson Street in Rusk. JHS Class of ‘90 reunites

The HOPE van offers rides to anywhere in the Jacksonville city limits during regular business hours Monday through Thursday. Anyone needing a ride can call 903-586-7781 or 903-393-1921 to make an appointment or to be picked up.



Community Kitchen for HOPE open

The Community Kitchen for HOPE serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge, Monday through Friday to anyone who shows up. Breakfast is served 8:30-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kitchen is at 595 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.



Rusk offers public transportation

The city of Rusk’s bus service operates within the city limits Monday through Friday. Boarding fee is $1 and entitles the rider to two stops. Additional stops cost 50 cents. There is no charge for the return trip home. Rusk senior citizens and disabled can call 903-683-2213 for pickup or for more details.



YMCA holds after-school care

The YMCA will begin offering after-school care in Jacksonville this fall at West Side Elementary. The cost is $30 per child, with a discounted rate for each additional child. To apply for care or to work part-time at the after-school program at West Side, call the YMCA in Tyler at 903-593-7327.



Alcoholics Anonymous offers Jacksonville Recovery Group

Alcoholics Anonymous conducts meetings every week at 316 West Larissa St. The meetings take place Monday through Saturday at noon, and Nov. 2 through Sunday at 8 p.m.



Healing Room offered

River of Life Christian Church in Rusk has recently opened a Healing Room in which they offer prayer free of charge to anyone in need of healing. Family seeks information about grave desecration

The family of Carmen Leanna Jenkins is looking for the person or persons who have been desecrating Carmen’s grave. Carmen passed away Dec. 20, 2008, and the lights from her grave have been stolen several times. A reward has been offered for the capture of whoever is taking them. Account set up for cancer patient

An account has been set up at Austin Bank for longtime Jacksonville Independent School District employee Brenda Bailey Hampton. She was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

Ride for Life accepts donations

Ride for Life Donations for the family of Melisa Wells Whiteley, recently deceased granddaughter of Pansy Suggs and daughter of Doug and Paula French, will be accepted at Texas National Bank under Ride for Life account under the name of Melissa Wells Whiteley. All donations will go toward burial expenses. All donations are appreciated.



Post 9/11 GI Bill offered

The VA is accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. Individuals with active duty service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.GIBILL.VA.gov. The program provides tuition assistance, a housing allowance, a books and supplies stipend, and the option to transfer these benefits to family members under certain circumstances. Anyone interested in joining the Cherokee Rangers Old West shooting club can call the club range master at 903-539-8316. Members are anyone who enjoys firing a wide variety of classic firearms from the Old West era at its safe secure firing range in the Rusk area, which offers 10 different target stages. The club is family oriented and stresses firearm education and safety.



Car seat safety classes

Living Alternatives Inc. in Jacksonville holds two Safe Rider car seat safety classes a month. Attending parents can receive a new infant/toddler convertible or booster seat for attending at no cost. Adopt-a-Street program offered

The city of Jacksonville-sponsored organization, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, is asking for citizens’ help in getting rid of the litter along the streets and roads. If you would like to adopt a street or road in the city or in Cherokee County, call the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, 903-586-2217.



Klein cookbooks for sale

Klein cookbooks supporting the Klein Animal Shelter are now available for a minimum donation of $12 and can be purchased at 208 E. Tena St. in Jacksonville. The book provides a plentiful supply of palatable treats approved by both people and pets. Keep your VIP (Very Important Pet or Person) howling for more by serving them recipes prepared from this oh-so-unique-collection of delectable treats.



Ministerial Alliance meets

The Ministerial Alliance provides an opportunity for the leaders of local churches to meet for prayer, fellowship and planning. All pastors are welcomed. HAMM open for tours

The Historical Aviation Memorial Museum is open for aviation fans from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The museum includes exhibits, meeting rooms, a gift shop, the largest collection of aviation art in East Texas, aircraft memorabilia and military aircraft. The museum is closed Monday. Admission is $5 for adults, free for active military personnel with I.D., $3 for ages 13-17, $2 for children 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under.
