JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville Independent School District officials have set dates for groundbreaking ceremonies for the new East Side Elementary and new Joe Wright Elementary campuses.
The ceremony for East Side will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the site of the school, 711 Fort Worth St. The new campus will be built directly behind the current East Side campus.
The ceremony for Joe Wright will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 on the corner of U.S. Highway 175 and Pineda Street, the home of the school's new campus. It is being built on JISD-owned land.
"It's an exciting time that we have all been looking forward to," said JISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Wardell. "We appreciate the community for
their support in every way in helping to get us to this point."
Wardell said officials estimate the construction of the two new campuses to be complete in time to begin the 2012-2013 school year.
“That is still an ambitious goal, but we plan to move in the first day of the 2012 school year,” he said.
Crews working for Pogue Construction arrived at the two sites early last week, beginning the dirt work for each new campus.
Construction of the two campuses and renovations and additions to Fred Douglass Elementary and Jacksonville High School are being paid for by a $49.9 million bond approved by Jacksonville voters in November 2010.
Of that money, approximately 66 percent is funding the two new campuses. About 24 percent will pay for renovations and additions at Jacksonville High School and the remaining 9 percent will fund construction at Fred Douglass.
