The Ross Senior Activity Center has a variety of activities planned for the upcoming weeks – all of them free to Activity Center members.
Marylyn Bennett is starting her arts and crafts classes at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, at the Center, located at the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St. She will hold classes every Tuesday on numerous subjects, including creating stained glass greeting cards and turning trash into treasures.
“We always have a whole lot of fun,” Bennett said. “Some of my classes are simply presentations, where you might learn something new, and some of them are hands-on where you can create something beautiful.”
Classes are from 10 to 11 a.m. each Tuesday and include “Stained Glass Greeting Cards,” make greeting cards using tissue paper than look like stained glass; “Gift Containers,” create gift containers from materials found around the home; and more.
Diane Vandenberg leads free yoga classes from 9 to 10 a.m. every Wednesday at the Activity Center. Anyone interested in this low-impact exercise is welcome.
“I’m not a yoga instructor, but I’ve taken classes for three years,” Vandenberg said. “Hopefully, I can show participants some pointers and help get them more comfortable with the moves.”
On Thursdays, Judy Faye Garner will hold scrap booking classes from 10 a.m. to noon. Garner is the an independent consultant for Close to My Heart, a scrapbooking website.
“I have always dreamed of having my own business but never found what was right for me,” Garner states on her personalized Close to My Heart web page, judyfaye.myctmh.com. “While attending a Close to my Heart gathering I knew I had found the business opportunity that was perfect for me. Our mission is to “show you how” to celebrate relationships through the art of scrapbooking and stamping faster, simpler and easier.”
Domino, 42, Mexican Train and Chickenfoot games are held from 9 a.m. to noon every Monday. The Activity Center also holds a community dance every second Saturday of the month at the Rusk Civic Center. The classic county band Texas Express will play during the July dance. Admission is $3 a person and $5 a couple. Doors open at 6 p.m.; dancing starts at 6:30 p.m. The entire community is welcome to come enjoy the music and cut a rug. Refreshments will be available.
Upcoming events include cardio exercise classes, water aerobics classes, quilting demonstrations, AARP driver safety courses and other activities.
The Ross Senior Activity Center is open every Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., to all senior citizens and is sponsored by the Friends of the Singletary Memorial Library and the city of Rusk. Admission is free. Refreshments are available. Annual membership for the Ross Senior Activity Center is $15.
