One candidate withdraws, districts cancel elections due to unopposed races

CHEROKEE COUNTY — The field of candidates in New Summerfield's May 11 school board election has decreased by one, as James Neeley withdrew his candidacy Monday, according to district officials.

Vying for two at-large positions, each of which comes with a three-year term, are Lori Lawson, Gregory Carpenter and incumbent Glenna Weaver.

In all, 26 individuals are candidates in school board elections in Cherokee County's seven school districts.

March 1 was the close of the filing season, and Monday was the last day for candidates to withdraw their names from the race.

School districts in Jacksonville and Bullard will cancel their elections since the races are unopposed, district officials said.

JISD incumbent Jeff Horton will retain his Place 1 seat on the board of trustees, as will Place 2 member Blaine Verhelle.

Each will serve three-year positions.

Incumbents Tiffany Kirgan (Place 6) and Michael Roy (Place 7) will keep their seats on the Bullard school board.

They also ran in uncontested races, for seats with a three-year term.
