Progress staff reports
A “Tree of Angels” is on display on the second floor of the Rusk County Courthouse in Rusk throughout the holiday season.
The tree, which honors crime victims in Rusk, Cherokee and surrounding counties, was dedicated during a ceremony Dec. 1. State Rep. Chuck Hopson delivered the dedication address to large group of crime victims’ families gathered to remember loved ones.
The ceremony, which was previously held in Cherokee County, is intended to help victims and survivors through a difficult holiday. Cherokee County residents who were unable to attend the dedication are invited to bring and angel or other ornament to place on the tree in memory of someone who was a victim or is a survivor of a violent crime.
Victims and Survivors Against Violent Crime is a support and educational group serving the East Texas area, and is open to surviving victims and their friends and families.
