Commissioner Underwood seeks 2nd term in Precinct 4

Special to the Progress

Incumbent Precinct 4 Commissioner Byron Underwood announced he will seek re-election in the March 2010 Democratic primary election.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Precinct 4 and Cherokee County for the past three years,” Underwood said. “I would like the opportunity to continue. We have had numerous improvements in a lot of areas since I took office in 2007.

“Even with the flood and Hurricane Ike, we were able to catch up some this year with our seal coating and overlaying projects. We have also replaced three wooden bridges with wider concrete decks to be safer and more efficient.”

Underwood said two more bridges are scheduled to be replaced. He also credited the previous Precinct 4 commissioner that most of the roads are paved, and Underwood said he and his teams have worked to keep those roads maintained and preserved.

“We have made several accomplishments throughout the county since I began,” he said. “We were able to purchase the buildings and property in Jacksonville, which houses the offices of the Precinct 3 justice of the peace and constable, probation department and the tax office, the addition to the jail and sheriff’s office in Rusk, remodeling of the Precinct 2 offices in Alto, purchasing the building in Rusk, which houses our historical commission, elections clerk and much-needed storage, and purchase the property in New Summerfield for our new office for the justice of the peace and constable.”

Underwood said the commissioners have cut the tax rate each year since he has been on the court. He said he will continue to strive to keep taxes as low as possible and provide the services the citizens need.

“I will continue to be the commissioner I said three years ago — dependable, accessible and available when you need me. Your prayers and support will be appreciated,” he said.
