Local totals in for state election

Of the just over 1 million votes cast statewide in Tuesday’s election, 2,486 came from Cherokee County, according to numbers from the county clerk’s office.
The total includes those who cast votes in early and Election Day voting, with the majority attending Election Day voting.
All 11 proposed constitutional amendments were passed, though some of them received more against votes than votes in favor in Cherokee County.
Proposition 11, limiting the government’s powers of eminent domain, received 82.66 percent of the yes votes in Cherokee County — it passed statewide with 81 percent of the vote.
Proposition 4, which aims to contribute $500 million of existing state money to a national research university fund, passed statewide despite being voted down in Cherokee County — only 931 voted in favor while 1,503 against the amendment.
Proposition 2 passed with Cherokee County voters at 2,472 votes; 1,687 were in favor of the proposition and 785 were against.
Voters in Cherokee County narrowly favored Proposition 3. Up to 1,264 voted in favor and 1,205 voted against it.
Proposition 5 was not popular with Cherokee County voters. Of the 2,420 votes, 55.58 percent were against it and 44.42 percent were for it.
On Proposition 6, voters in the county favored it 1,378 to 1,041.
Proposition 7 was approved, with 62.91 percent of 2,448 county voters in favor of the amendment and 37.09 against.
Proposition 8 was similarly well liked in Cherokee County. Of the 2,461 who voted, 67.53 percent voted in its favor and 32.47 percent voted against it.
Proposition 9 received 67.9 percent votes for it out of 2,442. It had 32.1 percent vote against it.
Proposition 10 received 1,563 votes in its favor and 871 votes against it.
Individual precinct numbers were not available Wednesday afternoon.
State Rep. Chuck Hopson said he is pleased with the outcome.
“It’s beneficial for landowners, beneficial for higher education and for veterans,” Hopson said. “The things that were very important to me were passed. I’m glad we had a very positive outcome.”
Sen. Robert Nichols said in a press release that he felt very strongly about Proposition 11.
“It will prohibit the taking of private property for transfer to a private entity for the purpose of economic development,” Nichols said. “It may be the last number of the proposed amendments, but it is of first importance in preserving Texas’ tradition of protecting land and home owners.”

Pct. 3 roads get a facelift
Precinct 3 roadways received a new road coat product that could save the area more than $50,000, Commissioner Katherine Pinotti said.
A distributor truck spent Thursday morning coating multiple streets with Road Overcoat, an alternative to the seal coat currently used by the precinct. -
One arrest at party near Jacksonville
Christopher Hicks, 19, of Frankston, was booked March 14 following a party where Sheriff’s Department Captain Chris White said alcohol was served to minors.
Hicks was released March 15 on $16,200 bond. -
Internet access grant near complete
Jacksonville officials and residents continue to anticipate expanded Internet access to the city.
Economic Development Corporation President Darrell Prcin brought a presentation to the city’s rotary club Wednesday on this very subject. -
Low cost spay and neuter offered
Klein Animal Shelter, in conjunction with Cherokee County-based Alexander-Ellis Veterinary Association Inc., has offered a low cost spay or neuter program, Shelter Executive Director Angela Wallace said.
Surgeries are done by appointment on Thursdays. -
Walking the ‘Path of Paul’
Drivers on U.S. Highway 79 this week may have seen a middle aged man walking down the side of the road with a red wagon.
Most first thoughts would venture to the idea that he was homeless, but this was not the case this week.
Michael Stuckey is a Mineral Wells native, and to him, the roads he walks are his home.
“I walk through cities and towns like Jacksonville in hopes of preaching to whoever will stop and listen, walking in the ways of the apostle Paul,” Stuckey said. -
Sunrise Service at Love’s Lookout celebrates Easter
On Easter Sunday, April 4, a 7 a.m. sunrise service will be held atop the rest area of Love’s Lookout. A message by R.G. Erickson of First Christian Church will be heard.
“The sunrise service is in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ,” said Rev. Enid Shepard, retired First United Methodist Chruch pastor. “We do it to celebrate joy and in the setting of the rising sun, it is really inspirational and it shows discipline on the part of followers of Christ.” -
All Those Quilters
Anita Johnston wants more quilters learning the craft in her store. The owner of All Those Quilts in Bullard, Johnston said growing the quilting community is a goal of hers.
Johnston, a retired Jacksonville Independent School District educator, said her shop on U. S. Highway 69 opened in November, 2009.
“I’ve been into long-arm quilting for a couple years and I wanted a place to teach and gather people for quilting,” she said. “My passion is for growing the quilting community and I can only do that be recruiting people.” -
Bullard misses alcohol deadline
The city of Bullard will have its alcohol election Nov. 2, rather than May 8. City Secretary Doris Crockett said. A local option election to legalize alcohol sales in Bullard was called during the monthly Bullard City Council meeting Tuesday.
She added petitions for the election, both for the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders only and the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption only, gathered well over 200 signatures.
Two changes were made to the solid waste collection; Bullard trash pickup will be Friday, rather than Wednesday, and it will cost about $12.72 per customer. City Manager Larry Morgan said this is up $1.45 or so from the present cost. -
One arrested for strangling
Michael Wolf, 21, of Jacksonville, was arrested Feb. 26 for a charge of assault by smothering or strangling, Jacksonville Police Department Detective Jeremy Pate said. The arrest report, released only recently, listed his bond as being set at $10,000.
Pate said a report was filed by Wolf’s wife in which she stated she and Wolf had argued over custody of a child.
“While she was walking away Michael grabbed her on the arm and threw her on the bed,” Pate said. “He reportedly put her hands around her throat.”
He added in the initial report Wolf was not said to have blocked his wife’s airway, but police investigators determined the opposite. -
City manager brings Mo’ stability, morale
He had little to no experience going into a position fraught with turmoil and instability; City Manager Mo Raissi came to Jacksonville amidst a storm of local polarization and set to work restoring morale, Mayor Dr. Robert Haberle said.
