HOPE to host ‘To Your Health’ luncheon on depression
HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Enrichment) Partners in Health will hold their free, monthly To Your Health Luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 411 S. Bolton St. For this month’s theme, the luncheon will be joined with discussion over the dangers and warning signs of depression with psychologist Dr. Sam Hopkins speaking. JC holds fall opening concert
The Jacksonville College Music Department will hold its Fall Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Buckner Chapel. The program will include a variety of selections from the fall semester’s répertoire. The program will include performances by the choir, wind ensemble directed by Gerald Orr, and the vocal ensembles directed by Sheryl Hanna. The concert is free and open to the public. Maydelle Centennial planning committee holds garage, bake sale
The Maydelle Centennial Iron Horse Celebration planning committee will hold a garage sale and bake sale 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, at the Maydelle Volunteer Fire Department, and also at the Cherokee Trading Post on west U.S. Highway 84. The sale is a fundraiser for the centennial celebration which will benefit the MVFD. The MVFD is trying to meet a matching requirement in order to receive a grant for a new water truck. Rotary holds pancake supper
The Jacksonville Rotary Club will hold a pancake supper 5-7 p.m. Friday preceding the Jacksonville-Lindale football game in the Norman Activity Center. Proceeds will benefit the Literacy Council of Jacksonville. Tickets are $5 for all you can eat and are available from any Rotary member or at the door. Takeouts are available.
Rusk First United Methodist Church holds chicken spaghetti luncheon

Children’s Christmas Tree taking applications
Children’s Christmas Tree will take applications 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Senior Center, 302 S. Bolton St., across from Discount City. This is the only time applications will be taken. Single working parents, grandparents or legal guardians raising children, or families with limited income or having financial trouble because of unexpected expenses or loss of employment are eligible to apply. Must bring Social Security or ID cards for everyone in the household, driver’s license, rent/house payment receipts, utility receipts, proof of income either AFDC award letter or paycheck stubs or any other proof of income, proof of unexpected expenses, sizes of all children requesting help for (if shoe size is unknown, trace their foot on a piece of paper), gift suggestions for each child — all these items must be brought to determine eligibility. Children 6 months to 14 years are eligible if family meets requirements. Do not bring children to apply. Note that all qualifying children will be put on the tree, though not all may be sponsored.
Cell Phones for Soldiers drive held in Palestine
The Palestine Resource Center will hold a Cell Phones for Soldiers drive 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living, 1625 W Spring St., in Palestine. Brookshire Brothers presents ‘A Taste of the Holidays’
The Rusk Brookshire Brothers will hold ‘A Taste of the Holidays’ 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the store, 425 N. Main in Rusk. The event will offer samples of party trays from the deli, market, produce and bakery for your Holiday Parties. The Cherokee County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Bonner Place, 421 S. Bonner St. members will relate experiences of themselves or their ancestors in military service. Youth agri-business loan workshop held in Rusk
The Texas Cooperative Extension Program and Heritage Land Bank will hold a youth agri-business loan workshop at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Singletary Public Library, 207 E 6th St., Rusk. This is a free workshop for all youth 10 years and up currently enrolled in a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter. The loan terms are: up to $5,000, for one year, with minimum interest paid back after the sale of the project. The loan can be used to purchase market or breeding livestock, materials for shop projects, or to purchase feed for livestock. Lake Striker Association holds meeting

AARP offers driver safety course
An AARP Driver Safety Course is scheduled for Monday. This class will be held in Tyler and is four hours long. This refresher course is designed for people over 50 years old, however, anyone with a valid driver’s license may attend. AARP membership is not required, but there is a reduction in the fee if you are an AARP member. The course covers such topics as effects of aging on driving skills, driving rules and crash prevention. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Those who complete the course may be eligible for a reduction in their automobile insurance. To register for the course, call 903-839-7789.

Hispanic dance held for Children’s Miracle Network
A Hispanic dance will be held 7 p.m. to midnight Nov. 13 at the Palestine Civic Center. All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Admission is $15 per couple or $10 for singles. Children under 8 will be admitted free. Food will be available, and a live band will provide the music for the dance.

The annual College Fair will be 2:45 - 4 p.m. Nov. 19 in the cafeteria. Admissions representatives from colleges, universities and branches of the armed forces will be handing out information and ready to answer questions about their institutions.

Fall swing dance classes offered

Post 9/11 GI Bill offered
The VA is accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. Individuals with active duty service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.GIBILL.VA.gov. The program provides tuition assistance, a housing allowance, a books and supplies stipend, and the option to transfer these benefits to family members under certain circumstances. HOPE transportation schedule

Community Kitchen for HOPE hours
The Community Kitchen for HOPE serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge, Nov. 2 through Friday to anyone who shows up. Breakfast is served 8:30-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kitchen is at 595 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.
Rusk public transporation
The city of Rusk’s bus service operates within the city limits Nov. 2 through Friday. Boarding fee is $1 and entitles the rider to two stops. Additional stops cost 50 cents. There is no charge for the return trip home. Rusk senior citizens and disabled can call 903-683-2213 for pickup or for more details.
YMCA after-school care
The YMCA will begin offering after-school care in Jacksonville this fall at West Side Elementary. The cost is $30 per child, with a discounted rate for each additional child. To apply for care or to work part-time at the after-school program at West Side, call the YMCA in Tyler at 903-593-7327.

Four arrested in county drug bust
Four Alto residents were arrested following a six-week investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotic Investigators, Chief Investigator Cpt. Chris White said. It was part of a major drug bust conducted Tuesday near Alto.
White stated in a press release it happened at two homes on County Road 2432. The search and arrest operation was assisted by Sheriff James Campbell, Chief Deputy Keith Radcliff, the Cherokee County Special Weapons and Tactics Team and many more; about 25 law officers in all from multiple agencies.
“We’re real proud of these guys,” White said. “The investigation was lengthy and a lot of time was put into it.” -
