BULLARD —
An antique dump truck on U.S. Highway 69 in Bullard was stolen, but not by the men who picked it up, Bullard police department officials said.
According to officials, the 1964 rusty, white Chevy single-axel dump truck was parked north of Circle Feed Store on the west side of the 5200 block of Highway 69 in Cherokee County.
The dump truck was taken in daylight on May 30 around 11:30 a.m., according to reports.
Sgt. John Walker, with the Bullard police, said after the story ran in a local paper, he received a phone call from the aunt of one of the men suspected of stealing the truck.
“A neighbor who had been using the property for cows got tired of looking at the old truck, so she had someone looking for stuff to haul it off,” Walker said.
He said it is too late for the property owner to get his dump truck back because it has already been sold as scrap metal.
“You can't do that,” Walker said. “You can't give away property that doesn't belong to you, especially when it is not on your property.”
Walker said the department is not releasing the name of the property owner or the woman who gave away the truck because the investigation is ongoing. He said the woman is faced with theft charges for the $1,200 value of the truck. The charge would be a class A misdemeanor, if the property owner decides to file charges.
“He knows the person who did it, and he may not want to pursue any charges,” Walker said, adding it is possible the state could pick up the charges in the event the property owner did not file them.
