RUSK —
Cherokee County Commissioners have formally endorsed proposed legislation that could, effectively, move Leon County to the 269th Judicial District Court from the 12th Judicial District.
The Monday vote – led during regular court session by plan supporter Cherokee County Judge Chris Davis – was unanimous in favor of the endorsement measure.
If such legislation is enacted, Current 369th District Court Judge Bascom W. Bentley III's court would absorb Leon County traffic currently under the purview of Judge Donald Kraemer – who currently presides over civil and felony criminal matters in Walker, Grimes, Leon and Madison Counties.
Judge Bentley of Texas District 369, was re-elected after running opposed in 2010. His current term expires in 2014.
He was not immediately available to comment Monday.
But Judge Davis said he believes adding Leon County to the 369th District Court is definitely a good idea.
"I will never be one to stand in the way of a public servant asking for more work," Davis said. "I've visited with the county judges from Leon and Anderson counties and they both think the move will be beneficial to the justice system."
This plan will be forwarded to lawmakers during the current legislative session. The proposed law must now be drawn up and submitted by March 2.
