Klein Animal Shelter, in conjunction with Cherokee County-based Alexander-Ellis Veterinary Association Inc., has offered a low cost spay or neuter program, Shelter Executive Director Angela Wallace said.
Surgeries are done by appointment on Thursdays.
“This is a cumulative effort between us and Alexander Veterinary Medical Association,” she said. “The program is one of their community efforts to help all citizens of the county and beyond.”
She said the shelter and the medical association have worked together in the past to provide private spays or neuters for the last year and a half or so; this idea is recent to the past few months.
“We wanted to figure out ways to increase the availability of veterinary medicine to the community,” she also said. “Spaying or neutering is the only way to stop pet overpopulation and it stops a huge number of preventable diseases. It also prevents unwanted litters.”
Wallace said anyone can call the shelter at 903-586-7336 to make an appointment. In addition, vaccines for dogs and cats are offered alongside other services.
Pricing varies between the animals and their weight level, but operations can go as low as $12.
Representatives from the veterinary medical association were unavailable for comment Thursday afternoon.
