JACKSONVILLE —
According to a CNN report, experts conclude that the biggest influence in the lives of children and teens is… (drumroll, please)… their parents.
While this leads to a lot of relieved sighs from parents who have felt like they were losing the battle for the minds of the kids, it also places a great responsibility right on their doorstep.
It is not the school, not the media, not the government, nor the church that is responsible for raising and teaching your child about life in general.
But doing so doesn’t have to be a chore, says Roger Pharr of the Crisis Center of Anderson & Cherokee Counties.
“My wife and I have raised two great kids, sometimes in spite of our parenting skills,” Pharr said. “Looking back, it was fun and I’d do it again. I think it is possible to enjoy raising kids.”
The Crisis Center will offer a two-day workshop, “How to Be Your Kid’s Role Model,” on July 23 and 30, from 9 a.m. to noon at their office at 700 East Cherokee in Jacksonville.
“This is not a beat-down, drill officer, 'here’s-what- your-doing-wrong' lecture on raising kids,” says Pharr. “We‘re going to look at kids today, how we were raised, how we are different, and how we can earn the right to have our kids look at us and want to listen to what we have to offer.”
The workshop is provided by funding from the Office of the Attorney General of Texas, and is free to participants. Registration is required by calling the Crisis Center at 903-586-9118.
The workshop will cover items such as decision making, communicating so your child of any age can “understand”, self-esteem building, sharing values, “picking your battles” and finding discipline that works, among other topics.
“We’re going to laugh, sometimes at ourselves and sometimes at our kids. I won’t tell them if you don’t…” said Pharr. “Parenting is like anything else. Sometimes you have to not take it, or yourself, so seriously that you forget to enjoy it.”
Pharr has two daughters, now 15 and 21. “It’s so great to reach that point where you are holding the reins, but allowing them the freedom to grow, and then realizing they can do it on their own.”
The workshop will be offered several times throughout the year.
