Jacksonville College is offering continued education classes in Beginning Spanish Conversation Level-1 and Beginning Spanish Conversation Level-2.
Teaching the classes will be Jacksonville College professor Dr. David Heflin.
“I teach these courses for a reason,” Heflin said. “I find that the courses are needed so that professionals and community members alike can broaden their range of skills and be able to communicate with Spanish speakers better.”
Heflin said that there is a great need for native English speakers to know some Spanish as well.
“Hispanics make up over one-third of the population of Cherokee County, and with the number of Spanish speakers rapidly growing in Texas and throuout the United States,” states a release from Heflin.
“Learning to communicate with the ever growing spanish speaking population is becoming necessary.”
Heflin said the college works hard to keep costs for the classes down in order to reach potential students.
“The classes we’re going to offer are very affordable — we basically teach them at cost,” he said.
Heflin said that when he teaches his classes, he wants them to be fun. Since the classes are continuing education, he thinks most enrollees really want to be there and learn.
He said his continuing education classes are a low-stress environment in which people can broaden their skills.
“My philosophy is, when your learning a language,” he said. “It’s easier to learn when you’re not stressed.”
The classes will be held every Tuesday starting Sept. 14 through Oct. 12.
The classes are open to the public and are from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. every week.
Cost for the classes is $95 for Level 1 and $75 for Level 2.
At the end of the course, depending on whether the student completed all necessary assignments, a certificate worth 1.0 continuing education units will be awarded.
