Troup introduces new board members to public

TROUP — Exactly 72 hours after the May 12 election, Troup ISD had its three new board members take their place at the school board meeting on Tuesday.

Gene Whitsell, Bill Plunkett and Joseph Womack joined Bill Lacy, Melissa Young, Andy Griffin and Johnny Johnson on the board. Lacy, Young, Griffin and Johnson were not up for re-election this year.

Whitsell defeated former board president Joe Paul McElroy, Plunkett won his race over Buddy Fite and Womack defeated Homer Jones.

The board also elected its officers Tuesday, choosing Griffin as its new president, Whitsell as vice president and Womack as secretary.

During the administrative report, Superintendent Dr. Marvin Beaty suggested the board members meet with the curriculum, business and technology directors to understand how reports are put together.

Beaty said with the three-hour mandated team building meeting, it would be good to get a feeling of what everyone wants before the planning of the budget begins.

“Hopefully those three hours of team building can be done between now and the regular meeting,” he said. “We want to know what the priorities are.”

In a previous meeting, a committee was put together to review the agriculture department facilities and the baseball and softball scoreboards for possible replacement.

“Baseball and softball scoreboards last a long time, but at some point they need to be replaced,” said Dewayne Brown, executive director of support services.
