TYLER — The second Saturday is quickly approaching, and at the Tyler Museum of Art, that means free family fun!
Join the TMA as we take a hands-on approach to New Works: Highlights from the Permanent Collection using exciting art activities in the TMA classroom this Saturday, March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Enjoy a rich environment that will make learning about fine art fun for you and your kids. Light refreshments will be served, and all visitors are encouraged to explore New Works using a free gallery guide provided by the Tyler Museum of Art.
Space for Family Day is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early by calling (903) 595-1001.
“In 2010, we decided to increase the number of our Family Day events,” said Ken Tomio, TMA Head of Education. “We now host the event every second Saturday, and the response from the community has been overwhelming. Every month, we see new faces!”
Family Day art activities are designed by members of the TMA staff to reflect themes and/or techniques represented in the exhibition New Works: Highlights from the Permanent Collection.
New activities are designed for each Family Day, and no two events are ever the same.
New Works: Highlights from the Permanent Collection tells the tale of a growing and vibrant institution that has, since 1971, cultivated the community’s interest in the visual arts and developed an extensive permanent collection that is both interesting and important.
Works included in the exhibition will capture the interest and imagination of the young and young at heart.
For example, Those Who Believe, by Mark Messersmith presents a collision of fanciful images including a dangling butterfly and a wooden ladder; viewers who look closely will discover a wild life that flourishes inside the piece, creating a wonderland of animal and plant life for all to enjoy.
The second Saturday Family Day is one of many educational programs offered by the Tyler Museum of Art, including Seniors’ Days and First Friday Art Tours.
“Since our beginnings, it has been a goal of the Board of the Tyler Museum of Art to offer enriching programs to the community at no cost, so that everyone has the chance to walk in and experience the world of the visual arts,” said Mr. Tomio. “We believe that our monthly Family Days carry on this tradition of community service set by our founding partners.”
New Works: Highlights from the Permanent Collection was organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, and will remain on display in the Museum’s North Gallery through Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Collectors’ Circle Sponsors are the Julietta Jarvis Foundation, Inc., Joyce & Bill Pirtle, Sheryl Rogers Palmer, and the A.W. Riter, Jr. Family Foundation. The Tyler Museum of Art is supported by its members, Tyler Junior College, and the City of Tyler.
The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street.
Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. (The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.)
Lunch is available in the Museum Café from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the TMA Gift Shop is open during Museum hours.
