Cherokee County man gets 15 years for sexual assault

JACKSONVILLE —

A Cherokee County man is incarcerated after being convicted on multiple counts of sexual assault and indecency Friday.

Timothy Ray Hill Sr., 50, was found guilty by a jury on six counts of sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact. Hill received 15 years for each charge, which will be served concurrently, and fined $5,000 for each count.

According to Cherokee County First Assistant District Attorney Rachel Patton,  sexual assault and indecency with a child by sexual contact are punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

“I’m very happy with the verdict,” said Patton, who handled the case. “I think the victim in this case did a very admirable, impressive job in being  able to articulate the abuse she suffered for that period of time.”

Police began investigations after the victim, a 13 year-old-girl, told a friend about the abuse in 2009.

Patton said the abuse likely began in 2006. She said there was a more than 30 year age difference between the two when abuse began. The victim, she said, suffered from the time she was 13 years old until about the age of 16.

Patton pushed the court to sentence Hill to serve the six 15-year terms consecutively, but Judge Dwight Phifer ruled for concurrent time.

Phifer said he was unable to comment on the case and ruling.

Hill was represented by William Wilder, who did not return calls from the Daily Progress before press time.

Hill will be eligible for parole after serving seven-and-a-half years of the term.

She said she believed the victim’s family was happy with the sentence.

“I think that as much as possible with these type of cases, we were able to see justice,” she said.
