JACKSONVILLE — Texas State House of Representatives member Chuck Hopson praised the U.S. Supreme Court for its 5-4 decision in McDonald v. City of Chicago.

“In these times of ever increasing government intervention in our daily lives it is crucial to have a Supreme Court that understands the importance of protecting our liberty,” Hopson said.

The McDonald v. City of Chicago decision brings an end to the nearly 30 year-long ban of handguns in the City of Chicago and sets a new legal precedent for handgun legislation across the nation.

As a lifelong gun rights advocate, Rep. Chuck Hopson is “looking forward to the wider impact of this decision.  City and state regulators now have an additional legal hurdle to overcome before they create policy that interferes with a law abiding citizen’s ability to defend himself.”

“The decision doesn’t put an end to challenges to our Second Amendment right to bear arms, but thankfully we have groups like the National Rifle Association that vigilantly fight to maintain our most precious rights.”

Chuck Hopson has been a member of the Texas Legislature since 2001 and has diligently worked with other members to protect and expand our right to bear arms.  In 2010, the NRA gave him an A+ rating for his legislative record, and in 2007, he cosponsored the Castle Doctrine, which provides a defense from prosecution for the use of deadly force in certain circumstances.
