The Cherokee County Commissioners Court will meet in executive session this afternoon in the hope of selecting a qualified candidate from a list of three to be the new License & Weight Officer.
After executive session, commissioners are expected to discuss and possibly vote on the position. Commissioners have not formally released the names of the candidates to the public.
The person who occupies this recently-recreated job of License & Weight Program Officer will be charged with monitoring the abuse of county roads and tracking down, weighing and dispatching tickets to truckers exceeding weight limits.
This person will follow in the footsteps of Earl Dominy, the first person to fill the L&W Officer position, and former Jacksonville Police Officer Ricky Moore, the second and last person before the program was scuttled last year to save money.
A divided commissioners court voted 3-2 to reinstate the L&W program at the Jan. 28 meeting. Commissioners also passed a budget amendment for $40,000 to pay for the program.
Precinct 1 Commissioner Kelly Traylor, who put the item on the agenda for vote; Precinct 3 Commissioner Katherine W. Pinotti; and Precinct 4 Commissioner Byron Underwood all voted for the measure, while Precinct 2 Commissioner Steven Norton and County Judge Chris Davis voted against it.
The specially called meeting takes place at 1 p.m. in the juvenile courtroom of the county courthouse in Rusk.
