Accident along U.S. 70 sends five to medical care but wasn't believed to be life-threatening

CHEROKEE COUNTY —

A multiple-vehicle accident along U.S. Highway 79 Thursday evening sent a handful of people to area hospitals for medical attention but isn't believed to have caused any life-threatening injuries.

"There were, I think, some doors jammed and people pinned in the car that firefighters had to rescue but nothing life-threatening," Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Patrick Dark confirmed Friday.

The accident happened about 6 p.m. when a truck carrying a flatbed trailer west along US 79 attempted to make a left hand turn onto County Road 4418, Dark said.

An oncoming truck puling a trailer struck the flatbed from behind, shoving it into the eastbound, opposite lane.

At one point, the emergency lights in at least one of the vehicles was disabled, making visibility for oncoming drivers difficult.

A third vehicle believed to be traveling west collided with one of the two trucks, knocking one of them across both traffic lanes.

"Another vehicle coming over the hill then struck one of the disabled vehicles," Dark said.

A total of five people are believed to have suffered injuries. The accident took place in the general vicinity of the Rusk County line, according to Cherokee County dispatchers.
