After planning for months and tabling the item several times, the Rusk City Council will meet again Thursday at 5 p.m. to consider entering into a purchase and sale agreement with American Heritage Railways for ownership of the Texas State Railroad. The council has met with City Attorney Forrest Phifer numerous times during the last few weeks regarding the deal.
During last week’s session, the city chose to postpone any action on the contract until Phifer had had enough time to study the newest version of the agreement — which they received just minutes prior to the June 27 meeting.
“I don’t think it would be prudent for the council to approve this yet,” said Councilmember Kris Morgan, last week. “We need to table this for now, and give ourselves some more time to figure out how we want to work this. There are several rabbit trails that we can run — we need time to figure out which one is going to yield the best performance for the city of Rusk.”
The council will also appoint individuals to serve on the East Texas Council of Government’s board of directors and executive committee. Former mayor Suzann McCarty served on the ETCOG executive committee until losing her position in the May mayoral elections to Angela Raiborn.
The city will consider approval of an ordinance which will set guidelines for using recreational vehicles as living quarters while a permanent residence is being built.
An executive session will also be held for the council to discuss ongoing litigation which the city is involved in.
