RUSK —
Generosity toward local firefighters was rewarded with a tasty snow cone to beat the heat on Monday.
Austin Bank in Rusk set out boots near teller stations for donations, and any amount dropped in was reciprocated with a voucher for the Hula Hut snow cone stand at the back of the bank building.
Larry Long, location president, said this is the second year for the fundraiser and last year about $1,100 was raised to benefit the Rusk Volunteer Fire Department.
“I hope people don't forget last year,” he said. “These guys were living on a couple hours of sleep. It was 24/7 fighting fires.”
Outside, children could pretend to be a firefighter by talking with a member of the Rusk fire department about the contents of a fire truck and trying on some of the gear.
Firefighters also talked to children about fire safety and prevention.
Long said he hopes to make the fundraiser a yearly event.
“The community support in Rusk has been great,” firefighter Kody Killion said. “After last year, people haven't forgotten their local fire department.”
