City hosts first-ever rodeo week garage sale

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce hosted its first-ever City Wide Garage Sale Saturday as part of rodeo week.

The event was held in the parking lot of the Norman Activity Center.

“It’s something we could do to get involved with western week,” said JoTe Brown, information coordinator for the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce “We as a chamber help out with Western week but we don’t necessarily have any kind of event that goes with it,”

Jacksonville's Marlene Jowell, who had a booth at Saturday's event, participates in garage sales and gives the earnings to charity. She said the money  earned from Saturday's garage sale would be divided between HOPe and Kiwanis.

“I think it's really great that the chamber decided to have this garage sale in the community in conjunction with rodeo week,” Jowell said. “The more activities we have, the more people get involved in rodeo week, and that's good for jacksonville and good for rodeo week.”

Any items she has left over will be saved for another garage sale benefiting the VFW in Rusk later this year.

“I just keep my eyes open and I invite friends of mine to donate things for different garage sales,” Jowell said. “Most of the time we use the proceeds of our garage sales for our various charities.”

Even though the event was labeled a 'garage sale,' some locals took the opportunity to sell things from outside the garage.

Mildred Garrow, of New Summerfield, creates watering cans, flowers and various other things out of discarded vegetable cans the New Summerfield ISD saves for her. She calls her operation “Trash to Treasure.”

“Its actually a hobby,” Garrow said. “It keeps me busy because I don't have any children at home and I am an energetic person.”

Patritia Morehead, a former Avon consultant in Jacksonville, had the remainder of products in her stockpile for sale.

“I work a full-time job too, so it was just a lot of work — it was too much,” she said.

Pro-Cuts in Jacksonville sold hair products and put feather extensions in people's hair.

“We are here mainly to get the word out, not necessarily to sell the stuff,  but to let people know what we're all about,” said Beth Driskill, owner of Pro-Cuts in Jacksonville.

Brown said they had 19 vendors signed up, while about 10 showed up to the event. She added that whether or not the event becomes annual will depend on the response from the community.

Nelly Montez, of  Jacksonville, came to the garage sale looking for toys for her children. She said she found what she was looking for.

Nancy Washburn, also of Jacksonville, was looking to buy some puzzles. She said she did not find exactly what she was looking for but she was interested in some other items.

“I guess I was expecting a few more vendors to set up. First time, you know it's pretty good,” Washburn said.
