JACKSONVILLE —
Jacksonville Independent School District trustees will discuss Pogue Construction Company's Guaranteed Maximum Price bid for the Joe Wright and East Side Elementary campuses when they meet for their regular session at 5 p.m. Monday.
The meeting will take place in the JISD Administration Building board room, located at 1547 Pine St. in Jacksonville. It begins with a budget workshop at 5 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Pogue Construction has not yet released the maximum price for the two projects, but JISD Superintendent Joe Wardell estimates the cost will not exceed $33 million.
“This will help us tremendously on space... both of the two campuses will be bigger,” Wardell said. “The gyms and cafeterias will be bigger. Plus, everything will be in one enclosed area, which is important to the safety of employees and students.
According to the superintendent, East Side Elementary currently consists of 33 buildings. Due to lack of space, administrators have expanded the lunch period from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
“We use every possible classroom available at the two elementary schools,” he said. “We're squeezing everything into the space we have.”
The new Joe Wright Elementary campus will hold 750-800 students, rather that the current 500 student capacity.
Money for the two projects comes from the $49.87 million dollar bond approved by voters in the 2010 bond election.
Also on Monday, the board will discuss setting the date and time for a public hearing to increase the tax rate from last year's $1.13 to $1.32 (per $100 of property value) for the 2011-2012 cycle.
For owners of a home valued at $100,000, this would entail an increase of $161.50 from the 2010 tax year, when the tax would have been $960.50.
The tax increase does not fund operation or maintenance of the JISD. The increase directly results from the passage of the $48.87 million bond.
“The public had this information, and the majority of taxpayers approved it,” Wardell said.
The board also will discuss the approval of new science supplemental materials for students in the fifth through eighth grades.
According to JISD Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Curriculum Judy Terry, the new Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IPC texts will be available online rather than in hard copy format.
The online materials will save the school district a lot of money, but Terry did not yet know how much.
The school board also will hold a 2011-2012 budget workshop at 5 p.m. for board members. The meeting will reconvene at 6:30 p.m. for the general public.
