RUSK —
Cub Scouts from Cherokee and neighboring counties are spending the week in Rusk learning skills and team building at the Three Rivers Cub Day Camp.
The Three Rivers District day camp will be held at the Rusk Civic Center for the remainder of the week. Officials said there are about 30 Cub Scout Packs in the district, and members from seven will be participating in the event: Bullard Pack Number 366, Frankston's 328, Jacksonville's 403, Overton's 317, Palestine's 475 as well as packs 405 and 227 from Rusk. In total 36 scouters are participating.
George Morey, day camp director, said the goals of the camp are to get the kids outside, as well as to help them develop personal fitness, character and citizenship.
“Above all, the goal is to have fun,” Morey said. “Matter of fact, we consider it a failure if they don't have fun.”
Campers will have the opportunity to hone in on their archery and shooting skills, complete crafts, learn about nature and swim in the Rusk City Pool.
On the first day campers were divided into groups and during craft time each worked on team building by decorating hats and designing a flag that will be each groups emblem for the rest of the week.
“What we are doing in Cub Scouts is preparing them for Boy Scouts and they do archery and (Shoot BB guns) all the time at their camps,” Holly Foye-West, day camp program director, said. “The main thing is to make sure they are safe and have fun at the same time.”
