Blood drive at Trinity Mother Frances
Carter BloodCare will hold a blood drive noon to 5 p.m. July 29 in the conference room at Trinity Mother Frances - Jacksonville. Everyone who donates will be entered into a drawing for a free Sunday night stay in the presidential suite (with a double jacuzzi tub) at Holiday Inn Express - Tyler South. Also, everyone who donates July 27 to Aug. 22 will get a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream, while supplies last.

AARP driver’s course offered in Rusk
An AARP Driver’s Safety course will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 30, at the Ross Activity Center in the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St., for all local senior citizens. Class fee is $12 for AARP members, when they present their membership cards and $14 for non-AARP members. The course is specifically tailored to drivers ages 55 and older and features issues those drivers face, including determining if a senior citizens is too old to drive. Course completers will receive a 10 percent discount certificate, redeemable at most auto insurance companies. Anyone interested in taking this class can call Cristin Ross, 903-683-2850, to register. Participants are also invited to bring a sack lunch. Other refreshments will be available.

FSA seeks nominations for county committees
Cherokee County Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations for the 2010 County Committee elections. Nomination forms can be obtained from the FSA county office at 4361 Loop 343 W., Suite A, Rusk, or online at www.fsa.usda.gov/pas/publications/elections. Nomination forms must be submitted by Aug. 2. If you or someone you know has an interest in providing guidance on federal farm program issues, then FSA wants your nomination. All landowners, operators and tenants of legal voting age are eligible to serve on FSA County Committees and vote in these elections. Almond Tree offers CPR classes
The Almond Tree will be offering a CPR class on Aug. 7 for anyone interested in attending. It will be on a Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $65 per participant or if we can get six or more, we will give each participant a $10 discount. The JHS Class of 1975 will have its 35th year reunion on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at The Legacy from 7 pm to midnight. Cost is $35 per person. Rusk senior center open
The Ross Senior Activity Center offers games of dominoes, 42, Chickenfoot and other games from 9 a.m. to noon every Monday and Wednesday. Scrapbooking classes and other paper crafts will be held from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday. All area scrapbookers are welcome. Refreshments will be served. The Center will begin yoga sessions, from 9 to 10 a.m. every Wednesday All senior citizens are welcome. The Activity Center is located in the Rusk Civic Center, 555 Euclid St., Rusk. Clothes Closet needs school uniforms
The Clothes Closet in Jacksonville is in desperate need of new or used school uniforms which are given out free of charge to families in need. Mickey Gear, director urges community members to go through and bring any uniform pieces they may have to the clothes closet by July 7. The clothes closet, located at 314. S. HOPE offers transportation schedule
The HOPE van offers rides to anywhere in the Jacksonville city limits during regular business hours Monday through Thursday. Anyone needing a ride can call 903-586-7781 or 903-393-1921 to make an appointment or to be picked up.
Community Kitchen for HOPE open
The Community Kitchen for HOPE serves breakfast and lunch, free of charge, Monday through Friday to anyone who shows up. Breakfast is served 8:30-9:30 a.m. Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kitchen is at 595 S. Ragsdale St., Jacksonville.
Rusk offers public transportation
The city of Rusk’s bus service operates within the city limits Monday through Friday. Boarding fee is $1 and entitles the rider to two stops. Additional stops cost 50 cents. There is no charge for the return trip home. Rusk senior citizens and disabled can call 903-683-2213 for pickup or for more details.
Alcoholics Anonymous offers Jacksonville Recovery Group
Alcoholics Anonymous conducts meetings every week at 316 West Larissa St. The meetings take place Monday through Saturday at noon, and Nov. 2 through Sunday at 8 p.m.

Post 9/11 GI Bill offered
The VA is accepting applications for the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. Individuals with active duty service since Sept. 11, 2001, may be eligible for this benefit and can apply online at www.GIBILL.VA.gov. The program provides tuition assistance, a housing allowance, a books and supplies stipend, and the option to transfer these benefits to family members under certain circumstances.
