Bullard alcohol sales petitions at city hall

BULLARD — By Lauren LaFleur

BULLARD — Petitions calling for a vote to legalize alcohol sales in the city limits were turned in to City Secretary Doris Crockett Friday.

Citizens for the Future of Bullard, with the help of Austin-based PR firm Hard Count Inc., began circulating the petitions Jan. 26, and each of the two documents were submitted with about 300 preverified signatures, said Billy Horton of Hard Count. The petitions only needed a minimum of 166 signatures to be considered by Bullard City Council for inclusion on the Nov. 2 ballot.

“It was very well received,” Horton said. “It seemed like a lot of folks thought it would be a good step economically for the city.”

One of the petitions calls for the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants, while the other calls for the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption.

Crockett said in a previous interview once the petitions are returned to her, the issues can then be considered by the city council for placement on a ballot after 30 days.

Because the next council meeting at which the council could consider the issue falls on the day after which issues may be filed for inclusion on the May 8 ballot, the earliest it would appear on a ballot would be the Nov. 2 ballot.
